Rain woke to the sound of voices, one of the voices sounded familiar to him. Jed. Rain listened. “We can’t take him, he’s too weak he needs to rest and heal,” Jed said.

Another buck spoke. “I understand Jed, but we must. Master Nick ordered us to take him, me sorry Jed.”

“No, don’t apologize Carter it’s not yer fault. He’s just so young, I don’t think he’s ready.”

There was a long silence then Rain heard another voice a different voice, but it was in no way new to Rain he knew this voice. This was the brown and white buck who had tricked him into going to Master Nick and getting a beating. Rain’s body ached at the thought.

“Aww, isn’t this sweet, Jed’s worried about his little brother. Aww,” the brown and white buck said tauntingly. Then he started laughing.

“That’s not funny Wyle,” Carter said.

The brown and white buck, Wyle, stopped laughing. “Or what? You can’t touch me if ye wanted to, Master Nick would tear ye to pieces.”

“Both of ye shut up. Carter, ye, and Noah can have my ration of food today, suddenly I’m not hungry,” Jed said his voice tight.

Rain knew what Jed was about to do and he couldn’t let him do it. Rain opened his eyes and groaned as he started to sit up against the wall. Rain looked around to see Jed and Wyle looking at him. Two other bucks sat in the corner with a small loaf of dried bread in their hands, Rain guessed one of those bucks was Carter and the other Noah.

“Aww, looky Jed, yer baby brother is up,” Wyle said snorting.

Jed pushed past Wyle and knelt in front of Rain. “How do ye feel today?”

“I’m feeling better, it still hurts but I’m fine. What about you? How’s your throat?”

Jed smiled. “It’s fine. Listen Rain, I don’t want to tell ye but we have to work today and ye have to come, are ye up to that?”

“Oh, he’s fine,” Wyle said.

Jed glared at Wyle. Rain winced as he stood and nodded, “Yeah, I think I can handle it.”

“Great,” Wyle said sarcastically, “then ye should meet the team. As ye probably guessed I’m Wyle and I’m in charge now, not Jed. So ye listen to me, understand four eyes?”

Rain looked down and pushed his glasses up as he nodded. Wyle smiled.

Jed scowled. “Don’t call me brother names Wyle.”

Wyle rolled his eyes and mumbled something as he leaned against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest.

Jed sighed. “Rain, this is Carter.”

Jed pointed to a chocolate-colored rabbit who sat on the floor. He stood when he heard Jed say his name. Carter smiled at Rain his green eyes kind and friendly as he said, “Welcome aboard mate.” Carter winked at him.

Rain didn’t know what to say so he smiled.

“And this is our youngest Noah.” Jed pointed to a golden buck who looked to be around Rain’s age. Noah stood and did something with his hands. Rain looked at Noah and said, “I’m sorry, I’m confused.”

Noah frowned then turned to Jed and moved his hands again. Jed nodded then looked at Rain and said, “I’m sorry Rain, I almost forgot to tell ye Noah can’t speak, he doesn’t have a voice. He understands ye, he just can’t talk or make any sound with his mouth so he signs. That’s what he was doing with his hands. He said, hi and he liked yer name.”

Rain nodded. “Oh okay, well it’s nice to meet you, Noah, I like your name too.”

Noah smiled and signed something. Rain looked to Jed. “He said we should get going.”

Wyle smiled. “Yes, let’s go before Master Nick kills us.” Wyle walked off. Noah followed and so did Jed. Carter grabbed Rain’s arm. Rain looked at him as Carter pulled a dagger from his tattered coat and handed it to him.

“Ye might need it, we all have one here’s yers.”

Rain took the dagger and tied it around his waist. “Thanks.”

Carter shook his head. “Jed told me to give it to ye, he said ye needed it more than he did. It was yer pa’s.”

Carter walked outside. Rain felt tears roll down his face, he wiped them away. “Where are you Bobbe? Please come, come save us!”
