Jaidie
“I hate you!” Rain yelled as he slammed his door shut. He collapsed onto his bed, tears coursing down his face. He curled up into a ball, hugging his legs to his chest. He hated this. Why couldn’t his momma just understand him? But she didn’t, no one did cause no one had to live his life. His momma didn’t know what it was like to be bullied because of what you looked like or because of your name. No one did, how could they know? Why would his momma do this to him? How could she even think of sending him back to that awful place?
He didn’t want to go to school, he didn’t need to go. He wanted his father, he would understand him, but his father wasn’t here and his momma was. Momma didn’t care how much the other kids hurt him with their words, no one did. He had tried to tell her all the bad stuff everyone called him, but it hadn’t worked. Then he had made the horrible mistake of saying that she wouldn’t understand and the only rabbit that would understand him was his father. Momma had slapped him and sent him to his room without dinner.
Rain’s stomach ached at the thought of no more food until the morning. He had been working hard all day and all he had had to eat was a small breakfast of oatmeal, and two small slices of buttered bread for lunch and that was it. His oatmeal and buttered bread had since vanished and now he was so hungry that the thought of dinner was too much to bear.
His face stung from where his Momma had slapped him. He sniffed and took his glasses off to wipe the tears from his eyes. He then shoved his glasses back on his nose and got up. He looked out the small window and sighed. He saw Hazel running around the yard, she waved for him to come out and play with her. He looked away and closed the curtains with a deep sigh. He wanted to take Hazel’s offer and go outside to play, but he knew Momma would get mad. Besides he was too old for that nonsense. Father had always told his older brother Jed not to play with Rain because Jed was thirteen that meant he was a grown-up. Rain had been little older than seven so he didn’t mind that Jed hadn’t been able to play with him. Besides Jed never really talked anyway, the only rabbit Jed talked to was father, as far as Rain knew. Father had been married before he married Momma and had Jed, but Jed’s momma had died giving birth to him and two years later father married Rain’s Momma and had Jana, Rain, and Hazel. It was all rather confusing, but now, father was gone with Jed and Rain was almost thirteen himself, which meant he was almost grown-up. He was too old to play, unlike Hazel who was only ten.
He sat back on his bed. He lay there looking up at the ceiling, then he drifted off to sleep.
“Get out!” Momma yelled. Rain reached for his father, but Momma held his arm tightly. Tears coursed down his face, his father hugged his head and opened the door. He glanced back at his family then at the floor.
“Get out!” Momma yelled again. Father didn’t move. “I said GET OUT and take your son with you! I don’t have the money to feed him! I’m not feeding anyone unless they have my blood in them, now GET OUT!”
Father looked away then looked back, tears in his eyes, “Fine, I’ll go but know this if something happens. If you can’t keep this farm up, don’t come running to me, because I’m not coming. Come on Jed, we’re not welcome here anymore, let’s go.” Jed stood there for a moment then hung his head and followed his father.
With another yell from Momma, Father and Jed were gone.
Rain’s eyes shot open. He sat up in bed, breathing hard. He wiped the cold sweat from his brow and searched the bed for his glasses. He found them and put them on. He looked around; it was dark outside.
He saw Hazel and Jana asleep on their bed. Jana snored loudly and Hazel, Rain smiled. Hazel was laying on top of Jana and her legs were dangling off the side of the bed. Rain’s stomach rumbled, but he ignored it as he opened his chest from under his bed and stuffed his clothes into a pack. After he was done, he slung the pack over his shoulder and went to the window. Not knowing why or what he was doing, he jumped out and landed on a pile of hay. He got up and dusted himself off and rain for it. He didn’t know where to look, but he knew one thing, the life Momma made him live wasn’t one he wanted. He wanted to find his father and that was exactly what he was going to do. Hazel’s words rang in his head, “Find a hobby.”
He wasn’t only going to find a hobby; he was going to find his calling and it had everything to do with his father and half-brother Jed. So, he ran to the first place he thought they might be, he ran straight for New City
