Rain ran as fast as his legs would take him. He followed Jed through so many alleys and turns that he was sure he would never get back to Bobbe’s house without help. He heard the shouts of the guards behind them and Rain wished he hadn’t run. He wished he would have run towards the guards for help, but he hadn’t, he had been too scared and there was no turning back now. His legs ached and his lungs burned from running but he couldn’t stop. Jed and his gang were moving too fast and if Rain lost sight of them, he wouldn’t know where to go.
He took a risky glance at the guards; they were gaining on them. He looked ahead and his heart froze, Jed and his gang were gone!
Rain felt someone grab his arm and pull him behind a wall. Part of him wanted it to be the guards and another part wanted it to be Jed. He opened his eyes, it was Jed.
Rain saw the other three bucks leaned against the wall, their breathing was shallow and they all had a dagger in their hands. Then he looked at Jed. Jed’s breathing was also shallow and he had a dagger in one hand and the other hand was clamped over Rain’s mouth. Rain didn’t like the feel of Jed’s grime-covered hand on his face but there was nothing he could do about it.
Rain’s heart was pounding against his chest as he tried to slow it down, but he was so scared that he couldn’t get his heart to stop racing. He heard the guards run past and his heart slowed a little. After a few minutes, Jed took his hand off Rain’s face. Rain wiped his face with his sleeve and looked around. He didn’t recognize anything.
There were few houses in this part of Newcity and the few that were here were abandoned. The windows were shattered, pieces of sharp glass littered the ground, boards hung half-broken on the houses, and rusted nails jabbed out off the walls.
Rain shivered; and he had a sudden ache for home, or even for Bobbe’s messy house, anything would be better than this. Who could live here?
A horrible stench greeted him, it smelled like rotten food and alcohol. It was overwhelming and awful, his stomach flipped and he felt sick and dizzy like he was either going to retch or pass out from the horrible smell. He felt Jed wrap his arm around his shoulder.
“Well, I guess since ye followed us, welcome to yer new home Rain.”
Rain’s mind froze. Home? What? He couldn’t stay here he needed to get back to Bobbe. He needed to get away from this smell before he retched. He pulled away from Jed. “Jed, what do you mean new home? I can’t stay here! I have to go home, I’m sorry but I can’t stay.”
One of the bucks snorted and said, “Well, ye can’t leave either.”
Rain looked towards the buck. He was tall with brown and what looked like white fur, but Rain couldn’t tell because of the grime. The buck’s eyes were the brightest green Rain had ever seen.
“What do you mean?” Rain asked.
The buck laughed. “I mean what I said, ye can’t leave.”
Rain looked at Jed confused. Jed looked down then said, “It’s like I said Rain, ye followed us, ye’ve seen our home, now ye can’t leave.”
Rain’s heart sank. No, was all he could think. He needed to get out of here. “Jed, please. Is there any way I can get out?”
Jed shook his head, but the brown and white buck spoke. “Yeah, there is one way, Master Nick.”
Jed’s head shot up and he shook it as he said, “No, Rain yer not to him.”
Rain was starting to really hate Jed, he needed to leave. He looked to the brown and white buck as said, “Can you take me to him.
The buck smiled. “Gladly.”
The buck nodded at the other two and they stepped forward. One of them pulled a piece of cloth from his coat and tied it around Rain’s eyes as he said, “It’s just in case ye try anything, won’t be long.”
Rain blinked at the sudden darkness. The two bucks grabbed his arms and led him through the darkness. He heard Jed calling his name then he heard the sound of someone being hit, a gasp, then nothing, and suddenly he felt uncomfortable with his decision. But there was no turning back, he would just have to hope that he would get to go home. He would have to hope this buck wasn’t tricking him and he would live to see another day. But that was a lot of hoping.
“Oh, please, don’t let them kill me,” he said under his breath to whoever might be listening. “Please.” Then he suddenly felt sick in his stomach. His head swam, he couldn’t think straight, his throat felt tight, and then his legs buckled and he plunged into darkness.
Uh oh. Rain shouldn't have come with them. I hope he's alright.
ok. just- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
is one of the rabbits Percy?
Amazing descriptions, you are such an amazing writer!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[also drawing dragons is a good thing.]
Oh NO!!!! I can't decide whether Jed is a good guy or not!! I like him, but the thought of him being in a gang sounds bad. I'm in such suspense for the next chapter. Ugh I hope Rain gets to go home - I hate the thought of not being able to go home. It's kind of a phobia, you could say. By the way your description of that broken down part of Newcity was so good! (lol I'm sure getting distracted by drawing dragons is a good thing.)
SO AWESOME!!!! I told you I love Jed!!! I love him even more now!!! So great!!!!!
Ohhh noooooooo!!!! Rain! Jed! YARGHHHHHHHHHH
