Rain’s whole body shook uncontrollably as agonizing pain ripped through his arm and spread throughout his body making it almost impossible to move. Master Nick stood over him with a wide smile, Wyle was grinning down at him. Rain groaned and tried to move, but a bolt of intense pain went through him and he screamed.

He lay there on the glass-covered floor, unable to move. He looked at Carter who lay motionless, blood trickling down his brow and the deep gash on his neck bleed freely. Rain looked away and glanced toward Noah.

Noah was huddled in a corner his face buried in his knees; his hands clamped over his ears. Rain looked back at Master Nick and Wyle.

Master Nick spoke, his voice tight and harsh, “Will you listen to me now, Rain? Or do you need some more encouragement? Hm.” Master Nick put the hot iron rod close to Rain’s neck.

Rain took a deep raspy breath. Maker, help me, give me strength to believe in You. Then he looked Master Nick in the eye and said, with all the courage he could muster, “I’d rather die a thousand times than serve you. What you’re doing is wrong, what you’ve done to them,” Rain nodded to the unconscious Carter and the terrified Noah, “is wrong. If joining you means I have to be as heartless as you two, then no. If joining you means I have to see others hurt, then no! I’m not joining you! You can torture me all you want, but I’ll never listen to you. Kill me if you want but I will never listen to the like of you!” Master Nick glared at him, his jaw set. Noah buried his head farther in his knees and pulled on his ears. Wyle smiled. Master Nick then yelled, “Fine! Then you will die. You will feel true pain today, today you will burn!”

Master Nick raised the iron rod over Rain’s heart, but it never hit. In a blink of an eye, an arrow whizzed through the shattered window across the room and hit Master Nick’s wrist. Master Nick cried out and dropped the rod, which fell right beside Rain’s face, but it didn’t touch him.

The door broke down and about twenty guards stood there and Rain couldn’t believe his eyes, Bobbe! A brown buck stood in front of the guards an arrow nocked as he yelled, “Nobody move!”

Master Nick held his arm to his chest, but he didn’t move. Noah looked up confused, he looked like he was ready to bolt but Rain mouthed, “It’s okay.”

Noah nodded then crawled over to Carter. Wyle backed away his eyes darting in all directions, then he bolted for the back door. The brown buck released his arrow, hitting Wyle’s foot. Wyle cried out and toppled to the floor only inches from the open doorway. The brown buck looked around for any more threats but found none.

Two guards stepped forward and took the cursing Master Nick away. Then two more guards came and took Wyle. Wyle growled as he was shoved past Rain.

Bobbe knelt beside Rain. “Bobbe,” Rain said, his voice weak, “You came, I knew you would come.”

Bobbe smiled and touched Rain’s face. “It’s okie Rain, we brought help now ye can rest. Are those yer friends?” Bobbe looked to Carter and Noah.

Rain nodded, then said with the last of his strength, “Carter needs help.” Then he slipped into darkness in his best friend’s arms, one thought in his mind. He would get to go home.
