I'm excited for this one!!!! it takes place during The Green Ember [book one!!!].....

I sat on the shore of Slender Bend, whittling. Chunks of wood fell into the water, swirling about before sinking below the surface. I wished the same was true for my feelings of dread, that they would sink away like the wood shavings.

I looked toward the horizon. Smoke clouded the area of Nick Hollow. Smoke that hadn't been there five minutes ago. I shuddered, grabbing at my sword hilt.

"Fleck! Lieutenant Fleck?" I heard. I stood, turning so quickly that i nearly lost my balance. We would have laughed at that. Would have, If my twin brother Stretch hadn't been carried off several years ago. Stretch. I missed my brother.

"Lieutenant!" Tommy Docker cried, running up. He was out of breath. "The wolves are attacking. The signal hoist is broken and the lodge is on fire. I know you have yet to deliver the message to Whittle, but Natalia needs you, Fleck." Tommy Decker gasped out.

"I'll head back to Cloud Mountain."

"Home?"

"Temporarily, yes." I said. I drew my sword and charged past wolves, one tearing a gash across my left eye. I ran faster up the steep and familiar trail to Cloud Mountain, every minute hoping i'd meet some of my fellow forest guards.

I knew i had to keep running, never stopping. I soon arrived at the entrance, gasping and hot. My young apprentice, now a captain in the Forest Guard, was on duty.

"Pacer..... Wolves..... Decker's Landing....." I stuttered. Pacer held up his hand. Silence. Then the sound of footfalls.

"Stand Fast." Pacer called. "Take another step and it will be a bellyful of arrows for you."

"I'm so hungry." A calm and familiar voice replied, "I'd eat just about anything right now."

I recognized the voice. My friend, and the heir of Natalia. Smalls.
