Kat diverted her gaze from Rhys, who was on the floor, sobbing. He gasped, as if he were stabbed with a knife that would never leave his body. She couldn’t watch her friend like this, it was too painful. Personally, very little loss was felt, but she knew that Rhys and Vell had been close, and that Rhys would never be the same. Kat busied herself by standing and beginning to look for her friend, Amy. Ever since they had escaped Amy had been distant, staying with herself mostly. She wasn’t inside, that was for sure. Kat opened the creaky door and stepped out onto the patio. It was a wonderful day, the snow was soft, and the sun was shining brightly. The ground sparkled brilliantly and the frost on the trees melted bit by bit, making droplets fall on her head. You would never be able to tell the pain that settled over this small hut by the appearance. Kat breathed in through her nose, a soothing technique that Maybelle had taught her years ago. She paused, leaning her ear to hear something. Thrashing could be heard from afar, where the snow was deep.
AMY!
She bolted, the light snow spraying up around her. She coughed as she inhaled some, her face hurt as it whipped at her face. “AMY” She cried, desperation in her voice. She wasn’t thinking, she didn’t even know what was happening! Amy could be in trouble, or merely running! She didn’t know, but at this point she didn’t care. As she ran deeper into the woods they had just come from the noise grew quieter and quieter. “Amy?” Kat called again, pushing a large branch aside to reveal a mountain of snow, covered in ice. Kat could see that there was a lake underneath both, and it was most likely below 0 in temperature. The ice cracked, as if it were showing its dangerous power to take anyone down. She held her breath so she could see better, not letting the fog ruin her sight. Amy was rushing away, already on the other side of the mound.
“Amy, what are you doing?” Kat screamed, her panic subsiding slightly at the fact that her friend was alright. She must have been paranoid after what had happened to Vell. She felt bad for Rhys, yes. But she had to save her friend. Or whatever she was doing.
“I’m leaving!” Amy cried back, not turning around.
“No you're not! Why would you?”
“It's my fault, it's my fault Vell’s dead and Rhys knows it. He’s just like them, Kat! Don’t you understand! He’ll kill me!”
“What? No he won’t! He’s different. I swear on it!”
“NO HE’S NOT! THEY ARE ALL THE SAME!” her voice grew dangerously quiet, “And I’m not risking losing my life.”
“FINE!” Kat shouted, her voice breaking. “Then leave me. Leave me, I dare you.”
Amy turned around, tears were falling down her face.
“You didn’t have to dare me to do it. I was going to anyway. And if you don’t come with me then I guess I’ll never see you again. Turns out you like that Rhys kid more than me, he’s a better friend isn’t he!?!”
Kat felt shocked, she hadn’t realized how much she had ignored Amy these past days, only focusing on herself.
“Look, Amy, just come here and we can-”
“No. I’m done. I’m starting over.” Amy spun on her heel again, storming off.
Kat stared in shock for a minute, before glancing back hesitantly and racing onto the the glass like ice, after her friend.
No. You still haven't killed Vell.
