Aliegha didn’t know what to do? Her mind swirled around in circles like a pool of water. Adrian had fallen into the lake, and it was all her fault. Her whole body began to shake with shock as she yelled out, her voice cracking, “Nicholas, Kei, help me!”

She watched as Nicholas and Kei stopped talking and looked her way. They ran towards her, worried expressions blooming on their faces. The girls were further behind them, but they also headed her way.

Prince Nicholas bent down beside her. He looked at the hole in front of her, his face blanching. Aliegha looked away; she didn’t dare look at him. What had she done?

“What happened?” Nicholas asked, his voice quiet.

Aliegha was about to answer when Abbi said, “We don’t have time for this. We need to get Adrian out! He can only hold his breath for so long, and the water is too cold. We need to get him out! Can anyone see underwater?” Abbi had taken charge, like a leader.

Aliegha was glad someone had taken charge because she didn’t know what to do. She waited for someone to answer Abbi. NO one did, and a long moment passed, a moment she knew Adrian didn’t have. She took a deep breath; she could see underwater, and she could swim. She stood up; she didn’t have a choice. She looked at Abbi, a confident look in her eyes as she said, “I can do it! I can get Adrian. I mean, I can see underwater, and I’m a great swimmer.”

Aliegha was about to jump in when someone grabbed her arm. She looked up to see Prince Nicholas. “You’re not going in, I am. He is my brother and my responsibility. If something happened to you, well, I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you.”

She looked into Nicholas’s dark eyes, then smiled. “I can’t let you go, Nicholas. If Adrian is hurt, if…” it hurt so much for her think, let alone say the next thing, “If Adrian dies then, you become the heir to the throne. What I’m trying to say is you cannot go, Nicholas. You are our only hope, please, stay here for me.” She gently pushed his hand off her arm and looked down at the hole. Then she plunged into the dark waters below.

She heard a muffled cry from Nicholas, but she was in the water now, no turning back. The water was icy cold, so cold that she felt like she was freezing. Her lungs hurt, and her heartbeat fast, trying to keep her body warm. She pushed down, further into the icy waters thinking only of saving Adrian.

Her eyes scanned the icy waters below her as she tried vainly to locate Adrian. She was about to despair, and her air was almost gone when she saw a faint green glimmer from below. The Green Ember.

She dived down toward it, straining to reach Adrian before she ran out of air. She grabbed his arm and pulled him up as she swam toward the surface. She was almost there, she could make out the blurry outlines of everyone above, but then she could hold her breath no longer. She began to sink as the air left her body. She tried to stay afloat, tried to keep Adrian up, but between the cold and lack of oxygen, it was getting hard to stay awake. Then hands reached in and grabbed her, pulling her and Adrian toward the surface. Once her head broke the water, she gasped for air, taking long gulps of the precious substance.

They had been saved! She only hoped it was not too late for Adrian.
