The years after Ky’s death passed quickly for Alan. It had now been five years since Ky had died, and David was still sad over Ky’s death. But David covered it up with joy, but if Alan looked into David’s eyes, he could still see the pain. He wished he could help David, but he couldn’t because he didn’t know how to.
David looked happy enough and had finally asked Kate to marry him, and she had said yes. And now, Alan hardly ever saw his wife, Grace, because she was so busy planning Kate’s wedding. Grace and Alan had gotten married three years ago and had adopted Zeke. They now had two kids of their own as well. Twins, Faith and Ky, who had just turned two a week ago. They were going to have another baby, and Alan smiled at the thought as he limped through the streets of Harbone. His leg had healed over the years, and he no longer needed a crutch, but he still walked with a bad limp. He didn’t mind the limp, though.
He came to a small burrow and opened the door to see his home. It was small with only two small bedrooms, a kitchen, and a small living room. Zeke came and hugged him, and Alan hugged him back. He looked at Zeke. He had grown so much in the past five years and was no longer the eight-year-old boy Alan had met five years prior. Now Zeke was thirteen and almost as tall as Alan.
Alan smiled. “You’re almost as tall as me now.”
Zeke smiled. “Well, it's not very hard to be taller than you,” Zeke said, laughing.
Alan backed away. “Hey, I’m not that short,” Alan said, trying not to laugh.
“I don’t know you are pretty short, honey,” Grace said, walking up to him, the twins in her arms.
Alan rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah, sure laugh if you want,” he said as he started laughing himself.
“Dada,” Faith squeaked, reaching out to him.
Alan smiled and took her gently from Grace. Faith smiled up at him with her big blue eyes. “I love jou dada,” she said as she kissed him on the cheek.
“Me loves jou too dada,” Ky said as he tried to get out of Grace’s arms.
“Come here, Ky I’ll hold you,” Zeke said as he grabbed Ky and held him and tickled him. Ky squealed and tried to get out of Zeke’s arms.
A knock sounded on the door, and Alan opened it and smiled as he saw David and Kate.
“Kake,” Faith said as she reached out.
Kate smiled and looked at Alan as she said, “Can I?”
Alan nodded and handed Faith to Kate. Kate held Faith and nuzzled her head softly. Faith started talking to her, and Kate smiled even though she couldn’t understand half of what Faith was saying.
Grace and Kate walked into the kitchen to finish making dinner, and Zeke followed them, Ky still in his arms.
“Come in,” Alan said to David, who still stood in the doorway.
David smiled then stepped inside, closing the door behind him. David looked around, “Nice place you got here.”
Alan shrugged. “Yeah, I guess. Planning on getting something a little bigger when the baby is born,” Alan said, letting his eyes rove over the burrow.
David nodded. It was quiet for a moment, then David spoke, “Well, speaking of family, um… Alan, could you…I mean would you be my best man at the wedding. I mean, you don’t have to, but… I couldn’t think of anyone else I’d like to have by my side when I marry the doe I love. Then you are also like a brother to me, Alan, and I want you to be right there at my side.” David looked down. Then added, “Plus I’m really, really, really, nervous.” David looked back up at Alan.
Alan smiled. “Of course, I will. David, you’re like my brother too, plus you were my best man, so it would be mean to turn you down,” Alan said, grinning.
David smiled wide, “Thank you, Alan.”
Zeke came into the room, “Time for dinner,” he said.
Alan nodded, “We will be right there.”
Zeke grinned. “You better be, or I’ll eat it all,” Zeke said as he ran back into the kitchen.
“Hey, Alan,” David said, his face suddenly serious, “I just wanted you to know this…I haven’t told you this yet, and I don’t know why. I guess I was scared, but…I…I well…I had a brother once. A little brother, but he died, and it was all my fault, and that’s why I’m mean sometimes. It’s because I miss him and today is his birthday, and so I thought I’d tell you. Because I don’t want to hide any secrets from you anymore, not now that we are going to be family.” David hung his head.
Alan smiled. “I’m so sorry, David.”
David looked up. “Well, we should probably go get some dinner before Zeke eats it all,” David said, chuckling softly.
Alan nodded, another smile crossing his face as he said, “You’re probably right.” Then they both ran to the kitchen like they were two little boys again with not a care in the world.
But what they didn’t know was that Harbone and their home would soon be nothing more than a pile of ashes and blood loss to the destruction of Morbin Blackhawk. But for now, they could live a happy life. But joy and freedom never last forever, and soon the end would come. But for now, all they could do was keep living, keep smiling, and keep laughing. For they’d rather die laughing than crying, and they would. Oh, how they would live their last days not weeping or crying, but singing and dancing until the end came, then they would dance in the sky.
The End
So, yeah. That’s the end, hope you guys liked it. Oh, and at the end, I was talking about the part in EE when Harbone was burned by the Wrongtreaders. So, yeah hope that makes sense.
