“No it’s a left turn.” Esme argued pointing in the wrong direction. “No, look here on the map. We turned right here, so we turn right again here.”
“Oh.” Esme said, frowning slightly. “Sorry.”
“Its fine.” Fritz said as they turned the direction he had been facing.
They had been walking for a while now, chatting incessantly. They had gotten bored talking about random things within the first five hours so they had started asking eachother questions. A game that Esme had decided to call “Swipe” when he had asked her why she had shrugged with a laugh saying it was the first word that came to her mind. They had already spent a night in the woods, and it wasn’t bad at all. Fritz had lived in the woods for a whole year, and Esme even longer. “Fritz. It’s your turn.” Esme said, interrupting his thoughts. “Oh yah. Hmmm. How about this, why is your favorite color red?”
“Really?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. “Thats easy. Its the color that symbolizes strength. Fire is red. And that represents the fire burning within me, ready to burst out on my enemies at any given moment. It symbolizes that I am strong.” Her eyes flitted to her arm again and Fritz didn’t press the subject farther. He nodded to her, extending his arm to help her climb a large rock. She ignored it as usual and scanned it quickly, swinging her feet once she reached the top. Fritz sat next to her, pulling out their canteens of water and handing one to her. She took a few gulps then wiping her mouth she asked, “What would you consider your best life?”
Fritz didn’t even pause before answering. He had thought about this so many times that he knew it off the top of his head. “Adventure. At least for a while. Traveling and seeing all the places. Finding a beach next to the sea and climbing a mountain. Seeing a waterfall and trying foods I’ve never had. But of course I would need someone to go with, and that would be you. Then after I had seen so many places that I could die then and have had enough I would want to settle down. Have a family. Have a wonderful wife named Esme who I would love more than anyone. Serve Bleston and help bring peace. But mainly I would want my life to have you in it. Even if I don't get any of the other things I want you in it.”
She blushed, which didn’t happen often. “I want you in my future too.” she said, swinging her legs over the side of the rock and sliding gracefully to the other side. Fritz stumbled to the ground, pulling out the map again and looking at it before heading straight. “My turn.” he said, determined to find a question that might shock him in any way. “If you could go anywhere, and never leave, where would it be?”
She smiled that wonderful smile and said without any hesitation, “A field. But not any field. A sunflower field filled with hundreds of sunflowers, so many that you can barely see the sky. I know you're going to ask why, it's because-” she tripped, falling forward. She laughed, catching herself and stumbling to her feet. “Go on.” he prodded. “Anyway. I would go there because sunflowers are always so happy! Even when they don’t see the sun ahead they wait for its return patiently until they die or the sun returns. They never give up. If I- well- never mind.
In a sunflower field.”
He smiled and looked at the sky a moment, waiting for her question. It didn’t come. “Do. Not. move.” She hissed, throwing out an arm in front of him. Fritz heard it also, rustling of leaves. Something was out there. Esme reached back and knocked an arrow in her bow, her eyes narrowing in the direction of the noise. They could hear whispers, there were two of whoever it was.
“Stop where you are.” Esme called, raising her bow. The voices faltered.
“Esme, get behind me.” Fritz said, sticking an arm in front of hers. “Not a chance.” she responded. “Who goes there?” she called and it was a moment before someone responded. It was a deep male voice. He sounded ill. “It depends. Who are you?”
Esme met Fritz’s gaze and he glared at her. “Weary travelers.” Esme responded. “But we will kill if we must.”
“Please don’t kill. I’m coming out. We need help desperately." came the voice and the sound of leaves crunching sounded loudly. Esme lowered her bow slightly as the trees opened and a buck walked out. His fur was dark in places, soot covering most of his body. His eyes were a sharp red and his fur was white under the soot. Something about him seemed familiar but Fritz couldn’t quite place it. The buck's eyes widened and his mouth gaped open, mouthing wordlessly. He looked as though he had just seen the dead. Fritz turned to see Esme’s reaction. Her eyes were the widest they had ever been and her mouth was doing the same as the bucks. They stared into each other's eyes and Esme's bow clattered to the ground. She began to shake with sobs and she collapsed to her knees, her face in her hands. Fritz fell down next to her, putting a hand on her shoulder. “Whats wrong?” he asked frantically as she shook uncontrollably. Fritz glared at the buck who still looked like he was in shock. “Do you know her?” He asked, glaring intensely. The buck turned to stare at him, tears pouring down his face. "Yah." He croaked as Esme stood and rushed to him, her arms open. She collapsed into his arms as he said. “I know her. I knew her. She was dead. She was gone. Esme was dead. This is my sister."

I’m gonna clear this up. The buck is Richard. I wonder if any of ya’ll got the hints... piercing eyes.... thin frames... both had an older sister that died...
and both had a sibling the opposite gender who they believed to be dead even though they had no proof. I hinted quite a bit lol
