Rain stared up at Master Nick trembling in fear. All of the pain seemed to return to his body at the sight of the monster who had inflicted it. He felt Jed stir beside him and he nudged him softly. Jed’s eyes opened and he sat up once he saw Master Nick.

Jed stumbled to his feet and began to wipe his bloodstained hands on his trousers. Rain tried to get up, but the pain was everywhere. He let out a small scream before collapsing once more. Master Nick glared at them.

Jed bit his lip where his scar was and looked at his feet. “Master Nick I can expla…” Jed started to explain.

Master Nick cut him off, “I don’t want your excuses, Jed! I know what you were doing in here and it's against the rules, do you remember the rules, Jed?”

Jed nodded and said quietly, “Yes sir.”

Master Nick stepped closer to Jed and put his cane under Jed’s chin forcing him to look into his eyes as he said in a low voice, “And what are those rules, Jed?”

Jed swallowed hard and it looked like he was having a hard time breathing, and it was obvious that Master Nick’s cane wasn’t just holding up Jed’s chin. It looked like Master Nick was also pressing it against Jed’s windpipe.

“I said, what are those rules?” Master Nick repeated.

Jed closed his eyes and wheezed out, “Can’t br-breath you’re on m-my windpipe.”

Master Nick glared at him. “Well, then I guess you're just going to have to get it over with before you run out of air, won’t you?” Master Nick pressed even harder on Jed’s windpipe, forcing Jed against the wall as he said tauntingly, “Now, go ahead Jed and tell your baby brother the rules.”

Jed nodded slightly before speaking, his voice broken and raspy. “We do n-not cr-cry. We do not st-steal for ourselves, but f-for ou-our Master. We ea-eat wh-wh-what w-w-we ar-ar-are g-gi-given a-an-an-and n-n-n-n-noth-nothin m-m-m-ore a-a-a-eh.”

Rain looked at Jed, he was pale his bottom lip trembled as he tried to speak, his legs were limply dangling above the ground the only thing holding him up was Master Nick’s cane. Which was pressed violently against his windpipe.

“Well, finish you fool!” Master Nick said harshly.

Jed opened his mouth to speak. “Eh…” That was the only sound that came out. Jed’s eyelids drooped.

Rain jumped to his feet forgetting all about the pain that shot through his body. He stared straight at Master Nick and yelled, “Stop it! You’re hurting him! He can’t breathe! Stop! You’re going to kill him! Stop, please just, stop!”

Master Nick sneered at Rain as he removed his cane from Jed’s windpipe and began to walk towards Rain. Jed crumpled to the floor in a heap, wheezing and coughing.

Master Nick came closer to Rain, and closer and closer. Rain backed away but he hit the wall. He groaned at the pain that seemed to linger in his back. Master Nick got so close Rain could feel his hideous breath on his face as Master Nick spoke.

“You steal for me now boy, and you do what I tell you to do. If I tell you to steal then you steal. If I tell you to fight then you fight. And if I tell you to kill then you kill, or else you can be sure to wake up and see a blood-covered knife in your dear brother’s chest, and don’t think I won’t do it, I’ve done it before.” Master Nick leaned closer. “Like when I killed your father while he slept.”

Rain felt warm tears roll down his face, so that was how his father died. This monster had killed him in cold blood. Master Nick went on.

“I’ll do it, I’ll do it, boy. I sure did love the look on Jed’s face when he woke up to find a knife in his father’s chest. I wish you could have been there.” Master Nick then walked off.

Rain ran over to Jed and lifted his brother’s head into his lap. Jed coughed and gasped out, “Well, n-now ye kn-know I killed Pa. I k-killed h-h-him.” Jed fell into a coughing fit.

Rain looked down at his brother and said softly, “No, no Jed, you didn’t kill him, you didn’t know. It’s okay Jed, I’m here now. I’ve got you and I won’t let them hurt you anymore, I promise.” Rain laid his head against his brother’s head and said quietly, “Hurry up Bobbe, please hurry, we are running out of time. Please hurry!”
