Caspian knelt staring at the limp form of his little brother who he had failed to protect, he had failed deeply. He fought back the tears that wanted to fall like a storm. Without looking up he said with a great quiver in his voice, "We need to get him to a doctor before..." But Caspian couldn't bear to say the last words, he was afraid if he did that it would come true.
Caspian felt Shasta's large form beside him followed by his smooth, calm voice, "Before we go anywhere I'm afraid we will have to bandage some of the wounds ourselves. He's losing tons and tons of blood by the moment. Once we do that, I can carry him to the hospital. We will get there much faster if I do."
Caspian slowly looked up to meet the gentle eyes of Shasta. Caspian opened his mouth to say something and then shook his head. "No, no, no, no, you can't. Shasta you have your own wounds, I can't lose you for the life of my brother but I also..." Caspian paused as the tears that he tried so hard to fight back fell down his face, "but I can't lose him either. What am I going to do?" Caspian said as he slowly began to fall apart.
This was the first time he had felt this way in a long, long time and he had forgotten how awful it felt. Now when he was about to lose a brother and possibly a good friend it was hard. Tears fell and his body shivered as if a gust of wind had gone straight through him. He wasn't the brave buck he once was anymore.
"Enough of this, I'm taking him whether you like it or not. Your brother's life means more to me than my own. I'm sorry, but I can't stand here and watch a young rabbit like Kent slip away like that, it's not who I am."
Shasta turned his head away from Caspian and looked over at Edmund who had been silent the whole time. Until now. "I will start bandaging the wounds. I'll try to do them tightly so they'll last until you get him to the doctor, but looking at the wounds I can't promise anything." Edmund began to rip pieces from his shirt. "Caspian, I'm going to need your help," he said as he tore another piece.
"Okay," Caspian said as he looked down at Kent who was soaked in blood along with the ground around.
"I need you to lift him up while I tie the bandage underneath him," Edmond said with a worried expression on his face.
Caspian obeyed the orders, slowly and gently sliding his hands underneath his brother's form. He barely lifted Kent from the ground. Caspian winced at some of the pain that vibrated up and down his shoulders, to take his mind away from the pain he watched as Edmund wrapped the bandage around Kent's middle, he added a few more bandages tying each one, then shook his head.
"Why are you shaking your head?" Caspian asked, a little harsher than necessary.
Edmund glanced at him then back at the bandages. "This isn't going to work. It's not gonna hold up, we need to get him out of here, now! The more we talk the more likely your brother's life will be gone like a blink of an eye," Edmund said.
No, no, no, no! This couldn't be happening? Why, why, why this? Why his brother, why not him? Couldn't it have just been him? Caspian couldn't believe what was happening right in front of him, it was like a dream but it wasn't, it was as clear as rain. It was happening. Caspian scooped his brother into his arms, holding him tightly and close to his chest. He slowly stood shifting his brother's weight in his arms as he did.
Caspian turned toward Shasta who had a brave look on his face, it was the wonderful look of a true friend, a friend that was willing to sacrifice himself for the life of Caspian's brother. Shasta got down on all fours and hunkered close to the ground so that Caspian could easily lay Kent on his back.
Caspian walked towards Shasta clenching his teeth as more pain shot through his shoulders like a strong bolt of lightning. When he got to Shasta he gently laid his brother down on Shasta's back trying to make him as comfortable as he could. After he was done Shasta nodded and bounded off like a speeding arrow.
"Let's go," Edmond said from behind him.
Caspian spun around to see Edmund standing on all fours. "Get on," he said.
Caspian got on and Edmond hurried after Shasta and the hospital where they would hopefully find help for Kent. Caspian still had a little hope for his brother's life, if it was still there. He held on tightly to Edmund's fiery fur as they ran past bushes, rocks, briars, and so much more. Caspian paid no attention to anything, the only thing that was on his mind was his brother and that the Maker could please not take his life away like He had done to their parents and sister.
Caspian must have fallen asleep because when he opened his eyes they were in the woods a little ways from town. He looked to see Shasta slowly waking him up. "We're here Caspian, but you have to do the rest because we can't, you know everyone is scared of predators like us. I know that you can do this Caspian, I believe in you and I wish that I could go with you, but since it is this way you must go alone."
Caspian opened his eyes wide as he slipped from Edmund's back. His brother's life was about to come to an end if he didn't do this. "Where is he?" he asked.
"He's still on my back," Shasta said as he crouched so that Caspian could get Kent. "See."
Caspian looked down to see the bloody form of his brother. He watched as his chest slowly rose and fell. Caspian could tell that his brother's breathing was getting weaker. He slowly lifted his brother off Shasta. Once again he winced at the pain that formed in his shoulders.
"Shasta and I will head back to camp. I'll clean Shasta's wounds there, we will wait for you and your brother to come back, whenever y'all are ready." Edmund took a deep breath.
Caspian was going to answer but instead closed his mouth and nodded. He turned toward the town where the hospital waited. Caspian took a few steps out of the woods and headed towards the hospital. He stopped for a minute and glanced over his shoulder hoping that he could see Shasta and Edmund, but they were nowhere to be seen. Apparently, they had already left him alone with his wounded brother. As he walked through the small town every rabbit stopped whatever they were doing and watched him with wide eyes and looks of fear. It made Caspian feel small and weak and he couldn't believe out of all these rabbits that none of them would help him.
He shook his head, ignoring their presence as he stood in front of the hospital. He was about to knock on the door but then remembered that his hands were full. He was going to call for help, then instead of using his hand, he used his foot to stomp on the porch hoping that that would get someone's attention and fast. But there was no answer. Caspian began to grow worried as his brother's breathing began to get even shallower. That's when Caspian started to call out for help and it was the first time he had ever had to call for help.
"Please, someone help me, my brother is dying. Please, he needs a doctor or he's not gonna make it!"
Not a single rabbit came to help, they all stared with the same wide eyes and looks of terror. Caspian's heart began to race against his chest and anger began to fill his veins.
"I know there is a good rabbit somewhere in here. What if this was your brother or sister or child or wife or husband or whatever that was about to die, what if those rabbits didn't help you? What if they just stared at you? Would that make you feel sad? Yes, it would because you love that person and you don't want to lose that person!" Tears stung Caspian's eyes as he spoke and looked around at all the rabbits that wouldn't help. "Please, I'm asking you to help my brother, not me. Someone, anyone, I don't care who it is just..." he choked on the last words as he fell to his knees with his brother in his arms.
He let his emotions take over like a great wave come to carry him away from this world. This world of darkness and evil. He just wanted it all to go away but he knew that wouldn't happen, not now maybe not even ever. "Where are you Maker when I need you? Where are you?" he said under his breath.
His brother was going to die and it was all because of these rabbits. The rabbits that wouldn't help only watch him suffer. They were bitter and cruel. Then faintly he heard a voice say, "I'll help you." It was a soft, wonderful voice.
Caspian began looking through the crowd, he didn't see anyone that the voice belonged to and that's when he thought, could it be? Could it be the Maker speaking to him?
Caspian heard the door to the hospital open behind him and rabbits rush around him and his brother.
Hmmmm. I'm not sure Caspian's brother will survive. I guess we'll see.
Great job! That was a sweet chapter.
