Ella looked into her father’s dark eyes with a smile. She then said with a sweet tone to her voice, "Well, I promised Sarah that I would come see her so that we could plan a sleepover at her house tomorrow, and then I might draw some today. It is a wonderfully beautiful day, and it’s got me in the mood to draw. Then, of course, I might write and that’s about it. What about you, father? You have any plans with mother?"
Her father took a sip of coffee before speaking. "Well, I know that your mother is going to clean the house before your Uncle Garten arrives for supper and we might go into town today." Father gave her a big smile before saying, "I heard that someone has a birthday tomorrow."
Ella looked down at her plate of food that was beginning to grow cold, but she didn’t mind. She smiled. Mother came into the kitchen beaming. "I wonder who it could be that has a birthday tomorrow? Perhaps it’s Willum’s birthday?"
This time Ella looked up letting out a small laugh. Her mother and father always teased her like this when her birthday was rolling around. Every year they did it to her and Willum and she never was able to keep herself from smiling or laughing. Mother walk toward her and wrapped her in a warm hug. Ella hugged back and heard mother whisper in her ear, which tickled and made her want to laugh, but she didn’t want to ruin mother’s moment so she didn’t laugh. "My little girl is growing up on me. She'll be fourteen tomorrow. My little Ella Jai, I can’t believe it! You are growing up into a beautiful young lady, I am so proud of you Ella!"
Mother gave her a gentle squeeze before breaking from the embrace. Ella saw that mother was fighting off a few tears, Ella would be doing the same thing except she was never one to cry at moments like this. But today felt different and a few tears slowly began to escape from her eyes. Her mother lifted her hand to Ella's face and wiped them away as she smiled. Ella smiled back.
Ella then saw father standing. He nodded for her to come towards him, so Ella slowly did. Father grabbed her hands and squeezed them tightly. "I am proud of you my little girl," he said as leaned in and gently kissed her on the cheek. Father then slowly released her hands. "Well, you better get to Sarah, but make sure you get home in time for supper."
"Your Uncle Garden will be here," Mother added.
Ella looked towards her. "Yes ma’am."
Ella then looked over at Willum who just finishing his breakfast. Willum wiped his face with the sleeve of his shirt, a small smile coming as he looked up at her with his big, dark brown eyes. Willum wasn’t too much younger than her, he was only a year and a half younger which made him twelve. She watched as he stood.
"Hey Ella, can I come with you? It would be way more fun than going with mother and father to town if you know what I mean?" Willum gave her a big smile.
Ella shook her head as she thought for a moment. "I guess you can come, just keep out of trouble, okay? Oh, and we have to leave now, Sarah is waiting for me. Probably, along with Maraly."
"Yes," Willum said as he ran out of the kitchen and slammed the front door as he ran out.
"Willum!" mother called out but it was too late.
Ella walked back to her plate and stuffed a few fried apples into our mouth and quickly swallow them, she then grabbed a biscuit and ran out. She heard mother than father call out, "We love you, Ella! You and Willum be careful."
"We will! Love you, mother and father!" Ella said before closing the door. She turned to see Willum waiting for her. She gestured for him to follow her to Sarah’s house, which was in town.
Town was rather busy today. Rabbits rushed around everywhere with young ones and baskets of food, it made it rather hard to walk. Ella and Willum almost bumped into several rabbits and had to apologize almost a billion times before they came to Sarah’s front door. Ella sighed with relief before knocking.
It was a few minutes before the door came open and when it did an average size doe with a smile on her face stood in the doorway. The doe had shiny, long golden fur with emerald green eyes that danced.
Ella smiled. "Sarah!"
"Ella, I am so glad you're here! Maraly is waiting inside." Sarah looked at Willum with a big smile. "And you brought your brother, I'm so glad that you are both here!" Sarah opened the door wide enough for them to enter and Ella gave Sarah a big hug.
I just got an idea... Is Ella's father Wilfred?
