Ella's heart raced against her chest as the buck's emerald green eyes widened with great anger. Ella wasn't prepared for what came next as the buck lashed out and grabbed her roughly by the arm and jerked her from the chair. Ella let out a scream as sharp pain vibrated up and down her arm.
She fought back the tears that wanted to fall from her eyes as several thoughts swam suddenly back and forth through her head. For one she was scared, for two what was this buck going to do to her? And for three she hoped that it wouldn't be something that he would regret. She held her breath as more pain shot up through her arm then back down. Ella hoped that whatever the buck was going to do he would do it soon. She was about to close her eyes to prepare herself for whatever was coming when she heard the wonderful voice of Doctor Hendow, Sarah's father.
"What is going on here? Get your hands off of Ella Jai, young buck!"
Ella turned towards Doctor Hendow in relief, he was standing in the doorway of the surgery room his white clothes now covered in blood. Ella saw a look of sadness in his dark eyes and she knew what that meant. Her heart felt like it dropped to the very bottom of a large sea. No, no, this couldn't be happening but it was. This buck's brother was dead. After all, he had been through to get his brother here his brother had died.
Oh, Maker, she thought. She turned towards the buck as the grip on her arm lessened and then was gone. Ella looked into the buck's eyes, they were pouring tears like rain falling hard from the great sky up above.
He spoke with a great quiver in his voice, "Wh-wh-why aren't you-you with my brother? What's going on doc?"
Ella could tell that the buck already knew the answer. She turned back towards Dr. Hendow who now had tears in his eyes. Ella felt like someone was crushing her as she watched what was going on right in front of her.
She wanted to do something with all of her heart but didn't know what? There was nothing she could do. She waited for the awful words that would soon come and after a few minutes, they did.
Dr. Hendow spoke them with a crack in his voice and more tears pouring from his dark eyes. Ella held her breath as he spoke to keep herself from falling apart. "I am sorry to say this but your brother didn't make it, I'm afraid that he lost too much blood in the process of the surgery. I am surely sorry about your loss, if there's anything I can do feel free to ask." Dr. Hendow hung his head.
Ella looked over at the buck shaking his head back and forth with tears streaming from his eyes. "No. No. He can't be. This can’t be happening. Please, I beg of you to tell me that he is alive! No, no, not again! Please, not again! Why, why, why, why does it have been to be me? I want to know!" he cried out as he fell to sobbing and shaking uncontrollably. He put his hand over his face as he wept and began to fall apart.
Ella's body began to ache she could not bear to see this buck suffer because deep inside it made her suffer. She thought about how awful it would feel if she ever lost Willum, it would tear her apart because of her love for her brother. Which was just like this buck's love for his brother, it was strong. Ella let her own tears fall as she fell to her knees beside the buck and wrapped him in a warm embrace. It was the only thing she knew to do.
"Okay, everything is going to be okay," Ella said quietly as the buck wept in her arms.
"No, no, no, no, no, no, no, it...it's my fault. All my fault! I was supposed to protect him, I promised them and now I'm a liar. I was supposed to die not him, and the Maker this is all His fault! All His fault, He took everything from me and He let everyone else have theirs! Why, why me? I want the answer but I know it will never come," the buck said as he took a shallow gasp of air.
Ella was about to give him an answer when she heard Dr. Hendow speak, "Ella Jai I need to have a word with you if you don't mind."
"Of course," Ella said as she pulled away from the embrace and wiped the tears from her eyes with the sleeve of her dress. She slowly rose to her feet and began to walk over to Dr. Hendow. He put one of his arms around her shoulders and led her into the room where the buck laid soaked in blood and limp. Ella's heart stung all the more as she gazed at the dead form of the body.
"Ella," Dr. Hendow turned her head towards him and made eye contact.
"Yes," Ella said.
"I need you to help me get this buck home, he needs rest and lots of it. I feel bad that he's going through all of this when he so young and as far as I know he has no family. That buck there," Dr. Hendow nodded towards the dead form, " is his only family. So young to die, a tragedy, one many people go through especially these days. I am sorry that your birthday so far hasn't been that great. But you and Sarah and Maraly can still have a sleepover. I'll make sure that this buck doesn't bother y'all. You are a good rabbit Ella and you are a beautiful young lady I want you to know that and never forget it."
Ella thought about the buck and everything that Dr. Hendow said. He had no family for how long, how long has he been like this? More and more questions collided in her brain but she would have to wait to get the answers. She hung her head as she said, "Don't worry about the sleepover let's get this buck to your home like you said, he needs rest."
"You are brave and kind, Ella," Dr. Hendow said with a small smile.
Ella turned her head away from him and wished with all of her heart that she was truly what he had said.
Ella and Dr. Hendow left the room and walked toward where the buck still sat on his knees. Ella knelt beside him and placed her hand on his shoulder. "Dr. Hendow and I are taking you to his home," Ella said quietly.
The buck nodded while tears spilled from his eyes and slipped down his already soaked face. Ella and the buck stood at the same time, she still had her arm around him to support him. Dr. Hendow walked towards them and put his hand around the buck's other shoulder then they walked out of the hospital and onto the busy streets. Everyone stared once again only this time their stares carried looks of sadness as well they should.
Ella thought they walked for a long time, at least what felt like a long time. Finally, they came to the front door of the house Dr. Hendow removed his arm from the buck's shoulder and opened the door. Ella led the buck into the house and saw out of the corner of her eye Sarah running down the stairs with wide eyes and a look of fear upon her face, Maraly was right beside her with the same expression.
"What's going on papa?" Sarah said as our eyes rested on the buck.
Maraly looked him over her eyes growing bigger she walked over and grab Ella's arm and pulled her into a corner before whispering, "Who is that and what is he doing here? Is everything alright? Something didn't happen did it?"
"It's a long story Maraly, I'm not really up to telling it right now, maybe later," Ella said.
"Of course you can tell me later. I just wanted to know if you were alright because to tell you the truth you had me worried early," Maraly said with a worried tone.
"I'm fine, really," Ella said giving a small smile.
"Hey Ella, Maraly will y'all help me get this buck to a room and get him settled. Papa, tell Mama that we'll be having an extra visitor."
"Of course we'll help you, Sarah," Maraly said giving a big cheerful smile.
Ella nodded in agreement and the three girls took the buck to his room and made sure that he was as comfortable as can be before leaving. Then they did birthday stuff trying to act as if the buck wasn't there when in truth is it wasn't as fun as Ella expected it to be. She couldn't stop thinking about the buck who had no family and how much it hurt to think about it.
Whoopsie!!!! I misspelled a name....yikes...but I've actually never read the books, only listened to them so you can't judge me too much guys....anyway I fixed it!!!
Doctor Hendow is now spelled the right way!!!!
What?!!!! He died!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was truly not expecting that. Poor Caspian!!!!!!!!!! Ugh I feel awful for him, though of course he shouldn't have reacted like that to Ella, but I understand WHY he did. 😭 I love Doctor Hindo and Ella!!! Doctor Hindo understands what Caspian is going through and he isn't being hard on him, and Ella just cares so deeply. It's interesting that she doesn't feel brave and kind though. :( That's relatable. SO good, Rissy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a thought for feedback - just keep in mind the actual extent of the pain when you write about it; like, Capsian grabbing Ella's arm would probably be painful, but not necessarily be agonizing. (If you wanted it to be like that, though, that's fine!) Since it's a really powerful word, it would be most effective for the moments when the pain truly is agonizing. So you could rewrite the sentence something like "Ella let out a scream as sharp pain vibrated up and down her arm." (The vibrating part is especially awesome by the way!!!)
So yeah! Hope that makes some sense, but let me know if not! <3<3<3
Awww. No Kent... You making me sad even though the story needed it. 😭 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 And Caspian.... Poor bucko....
