Tears ran down Alice’s face more freely now and confusion overtook her mind, causing a small throbbing inside her head which added to the pain in her foot and arms. But Alice pushed the pain aside for now as she stood there in front of Dan. Her brother was still alive. She could not believe that he was alive, it felt like a dream, but all of this was as clear as her reflection in a mirror. She felt like she should be happy that he was alive or mad. Part of her wanted to be happy and cry out in joy, but the other part wanted to be angry and yell at him. Most of all she wanted to fall to her knees and try to sort this out.

But instead, Alice didn’t know what to think. Emotions tore through her heart causing burst of pain to explode inside her. She had never felt this kind of pain before, it wasn’t a pain that you wanted to have it was one you wanted to get rid of but didn’t know how to.

She was caught between two worlds, her’s and Dan’s, but she didn’t know which world to enter, her’s or his? Alice collapsed to her knees and screamed at the pain that shocked through her body. Alice hung her head, as a flood of tears rained down her cheeks and clung to her fur. Her whole body began to shake as if she was stuck in a snowstorm.

Alice looked up at Dan, the flood of tears obscuring her vision as she continued to shake with her sobs. She took a deep breath before she spoke, and when she did speak her voice quivered. “I want answers Dan, please tell me why you didn’t come back to us?” She never took her eyes off of him. She watched as he slowly bent down in front of her.

Dan then grabbed her face and pulled her forward until they were face to face, then he leaned over and whispered in her ear. “Oh, I’ll give you answers, my sister, but first you will bring me the two bucks and if you don’t bring them, then I am afraid I will have to kill Pearl.” He paused for a minute then said, “Just like I did to Mama and Father.”

Anger rose up in Alice and her eyes flashed dangerously showing how angry she was. She jerked her head away from Dan and watched as he stood up with an evil grin on his face. This made Alice all the more angry. She wanted to rise to her feet, but her foot ached. So instead, she just looked up at him and scowled, a look of hatred on her face.

Then she spoke with a harsh tone, “You’re the one that set the house on fire! You killed our parents? What did we ever do to you?” Alice said, angry tears rolling down her cheeks as she waited for Dan’s response.

It was a long while before he spoke and when he did Alice thought she was going to explode from the anger that stormed through her veins. “I am done. Get her out of my sight,” he said as he looked down at her with disgust.

Alice felt Lancely grab her arm from behind, pulling her roughly to her feet. She clenched her teeth as more pain shot through her foot. Lancely then began to drag her out of the tent but as he did, Alice yelled out.

“I hate you! I hate you, Dan!”

At that moment Alice felt smaller than she ever had ever felt before she felt like a tiny piece of bread or worse a crumb. But the worst part was that she was crumbling into pieces and she didn’t know how to stay together.

Alice was dragged over to a large bird and thrown onto the bird’s back. Lancely got on in front of her. Alice then heard a loud screech before the bird took flight. Two other birds followed them with riders. Alice could feel the strong breeze flow through her clothes and fur, it caused a shiver to run up her as the bird flew higher and higher into the sky, taking her farther and farther away from the ground below.
