Aaron walked with his head down; Digory walked not too far behind him. Aaron felt bad for Alice. Yes, what she had said to Digory was wrong, but she was hurting so much. She had lost someone she loved. She was lost and confused. She just wanted someone to know how she felt. But Arron knew how she felt.

He had lost a good friend, and he missed her every day. She died from fever, and he never forgot the last words she had said, “Be strong for me.” Then she had died. Tears started to pour down his face. He needed to find Alice, she needed him, and he needed her. He turned toward Digory as he wiped tears from his eyes and said, his voice quiet, “I am going to find Alice.”

He watched as Digory looked up at him and nodded. Aaron then ran to find Alice. He pumped his arms and ran hard as the wind bit into his face. After a while, he stopped and bent over his hands on his knees, his breath coming in shallow gasps.

He heard someone crying, and he knew exactly who it was. Alice. He looked up, trying to find her. He saw her on her knees on a hill not too far away. He made his way toward her, wondering if he should approach or not. He decided to and bent down beside her as he wrapped her in a hug. She buried her face on his shoulder, crying as her whole body shook with the weight of her grief. He shushed her and told her that everything was going to be alright. That he was here and there was nothing to be afraid of.

Alice didn’t know what to do. So, she buried her face in Aaron’s shoulder as tears rolled down her face, and sobs shook her body. She tried to control her shaken emotions, but she couldn’t. She felt like she was broken, and no one could find the pieces to fix her. She gently pushed Aaron away as more and more uncontrollable tears followed down her soaked face. She turned her head away from Aaron, ashamed that he had to see her like this.

She felt Aaron’s hand gently grab her face, and he turned her to face him. Alice saw that he was crying too. They stared at each other for a moment.

Then Alice fell into his arms, as she said, “I am so sorry. I’m so selfish. I don’t know what is wrong with me. I feel like I am lost in the wilderness, and no one can find me.” She sniffed as she tried to hold her composure together. Then she added, “I’m scared. Scared I won’t be myself, that I’ll do something to hurt someone. I’m afraid I’ll hurt you.” Alice looked down, tears flowing from her eyes once again. She stood up and then turned her head as she smelled smoke.

She looked at Aaron and saw that he smelled it too. “My home!” She said as she ran off as fast as she could toward home. Aaron was right behind her. Her heart raced against her chest, her lungs burned, and her legs felt as if they would give way beneath her.

She topped the farthest hill and looked toward her home. It was on fire. Flames danced high into the sky, sending up plumes of curling acrid smoke. The air was warm from the giant blaze, and the smell that drifted on the wind was that of despair. The only thing she could think as she stood on the hill in shock was that Pearl, Mama, and Papa were in the house.
