Aaron lay on the ground his head in Cassady’s arms. He heard her whisper quietly in his ear, “Come on, let’s go to my house. You need some rest, you’re exhausted. I’m sure my Ma and Pa and my siblings won’t mind.”

Cassady gently pushed him away and rose to her feet. Aaron nodded as he slowly began to get up. But every time he tried he kept falling back onto the ground. Every time Cassady tried to be nice and help him, he pushed her away. He could do this himself be didn’t need help, he had come this far, he could go a little bit further. But his whole body thought differently and fought back against him, begging him to rest.

He then heard Cassady speak with a rough tone to her voice, “Listen, I don’t know why bucks always think they have to do everything when sometimes they need help. If you want to stay here all day we can, but don’t complain to me later.”

Aaron looked up into her eyes and saw that her eyes were that of a leader and a good rabbit who wanted to help. A rabbit that wanted to step up for others at the right moment when that was possible. A rabbit who wanted to make others smile and that’s exactly what Cassady was.

She was being all that while he was over here being stubborn. But what did she ever do to him? She hadn’t done anything, and Aaron knew that. “Fine you can help me,” he said quietly.

Cassady gave him a big smile as she said, “That’s more like it.”

She then bent down beside him and gently helped him to his feet, carrying most of his weight. She was stronger than she looked. Aaron smiled at Cassady as he said, “Thanks.”

“No problem,” she said back to him.

Alice looked around the tent, then her eyes rested on Pearl. The rabbit still held Pearl with a knife to her throat but Pearl carried a brave look in her eyes almost as if she didn’t care. Like she knew something that Alice didn’t know. Alice tried to look deeper into Pearl’s eyes, but it was like Pearl was hiding something from her.

Alice started to have a bad feeling at the very bottom of her stomach. She started to feel queasy so she took her eyes away from Pearl. She then looked at Lancely, who still stood in front of her, he looked at her and a devious smile came to his face. Alice looked down at the ground, there was something about Lancely that made her uncomfortable. But there was something else too, just by looking at everyone in the tent she could tell that they all knew something she didn’t. She was beginning to think that this was all a trick, and they were going to kill Pearl even if she did get Digory and Aaron. At least that would explain why Pearl was hiding something from her.

Alice then cocked her ears, she heard footsteps coming from behind her. The sick feeling she had rose higher. She looked up at Lancely but he was just smiling at her. She then looked over to Pearl.

Tears ran down Pearl’s face and dripped from her cheeks. Confusion started to take over Alice’s mind as her heart began to race against her chest. Her heart raced so fast she could hear it and beyond it she could hear the footsteps coming closer. Then she heard a voice.

“It’s been a long time, Alice, should I even call you that?” the voice said and it sounded familiar. She knew that voice, but it couldn’t be, could it? That was impossible, but the only way to see if it was true was to turn around. Alice took a deep breath, stood up straight, and then slowly turned around to see the face of the rabbit.

But she couldn’t see his face because he was wearing a cloak to hide himself. The rabbit slowly raised his hands up and began to remove the hood of the cloak to reveal his face. Alice gasped, not believing who was in front of her. There for a minute, her heart stopped racing and tears stung her eyes. After all these years, after she had thought he was dead, he now stood directly in front of her. It seemed so unreal, but she knew it wasn’t a dream because dreams don’t hurt.

Dan was alive.
