Aaron followed Cassady to the hospital, growing more tired with every step. He tried to ignore it; he tried to just focus on getting Digory to the hospital. But it was impossible because every step he took felt like he was caught on fire. His breathing was shallow and ragged; his heart pounded against his chest, begging him to stop and rest. But he put that to the side as he grew weaker and weaker with every small breath he took. His lungs felt like they were about to give up on him and his legs felt like they would buckle beneath him at any moment. He just hoped that he could get Digory to the hospital before then.
He looked up and saw the hospital just ahead. Cassady looked over her shoulder at him, a worried look showing in her eyes and on her face. He smiled weakly as he gently shifted Digory on his back. He took a few more steps, but then something happened. His legs gave way and buckled. He fell to the ground exhausted and looked around to see every rabbit looking straight at him. He heard someone speak.
“Don’t just stand there, you bunch of idiots!” He looked to see Cassady speaking; she had a wild look in her eyes, like flickering fire. She then continued speaking, her voice angry and firm. “You there,” she said, pointing at a buck with grey fur and dark eyes. The rabbit stepped forward and looked surprised that she was talking to him.
"Yes, Miss?” the buck asked.
Aaron looked back to Cassady and saw she still had that look in her eyes as she said, “I need you to run as fast as you can and tell Doctor John that I have a patient for him that needs to be seen, now. Oh, and tell him to bring the stretcher and a few medics.”
The buck nodded his head before he ran off to the hospital, which wasn’t that far away. Aaron slowly slid Digory off his back and moved a little to a more comfortable position.
Cassady ran over to him and bent down beside him, her wild eyes looking him over. Then finally, her eyes rested on his. “Are you all right?” She asked, her eyes never leaving his gaze.
He tried to speak but could only find a squeak as he was trying to get his air back. Then he watched as Cassady’s eyes left him and rested on the limp form of Digory. A worried glance crossed her face, then Aaron heard running footsteps coming toward them. He looked up to see the doctor along with four medics.
He watched as they lifted the bloody form of Digory onto the stretcher and began to take Digory away. Aaron slowly stood up so that he could follow them. He didn’t want to leave his friend alone. He wanted to be there whenever Digory woke up.
He took slow steps on his wobbly legs before they collapsed under him again. He fell to the ground, and Cassady ran over to him and fell beside him. Tears rolled down his face like a great flood of rushing water breaking through a wall. He tried to control his tears but found that he could not. They clung to his fur and drifted down his cheeks.
He then felt a warm embrace from Cassady and her soft voice whispering in his ear. “It’s going to be okay. I promise,” she said.
He wanted to believe her with his whole heart, but he didn’t know if he could. That was what his mother had said the day Bella died, that everything was going to be okay, and she had promised, but it wasn’t okay. Because that day his best friend died and he didn’t want to take that chance on Digory or Alice. He knew they would have to die one day, and so would he, but he wasn’t ready for that, not yet. When evil things were being done, and there was so much to live for, he couldn’t die yet. He couldn’t let the bad guys win.
Thank you, Rissy. I am shivering from the end.
