The sun slowly peeked over the hilltops and through the massive trees. It spread its warmth all around Aaron, which caused a small shiver to run up his spine. The sunlight came driving the night way and bringing a beautiful day and its warmth. Aaron stared up at the sky; it was the place he had seen Alice. He couldn’t believe she was gone. It all happened so fast before he could do anything or had time to think she was gone. But he would get her back as soon as he could think of a plan.
He turned and walked back toward Digory, who had been knocked unconscious. He fell to his knees beside Digory and looked at the awful scene before him. It was so horrible it made him want to spew, and he gagged. Digory was covered in blood, and some was pooled on the ground beside him.
Aaron looked Digory over to see how bad the wounds were, they were bad. Digory had deep cuts in many places that would leave scars. A deep wound bloomed on Digory’s side, and a nasty gash adorned his head; both were open and still bleeding freely. Aaron’s stomach flipped, and it was all he could to keep from throwing up. He took his eyes off the awful scene; he couldn’t look at it. He couldn’t even stand the smell, the smell of blood and a life that was fading. He checked Digory’s pulse to reassure himself it was still there. Weak, but still there.
Aaron did the only thing he knew to do and began ripping pieces off his shirt to clean and bandage Digory’s wounds. He did the best he could to wrap the wounds tight, to keep Digory from losing more blood. He hoped he could keep his friend alive till he could find help.
When he was done, he put one of Digory’s arms around his neck and lifted him off the soiled ground. Digory was heavy, but Aaron was strong from years of training and fighting. He had been training his whole life to use a spear and fight and help people in need. He shifted Digory to a more comfortable position on his back and began to walk. He walked into the woods, hoping that soon he would come to an area he recognized or that he would come across a house.
Aaron walked for a long time, his legs were growing tired, and he felt like they might buckle beneath him. It felt like his whole body was begging him to stop, but he pressed on, ignoring his fatigue and pain. He had to get Digory somewhere safe. The farther he walked, the more his body begged him to stop. He was hungry and tired he hadn’t slept since the night before. Ever since he had come to get Alice for the dance, things had happened. Her house had been set on fire, then they had run, then fought, and now he was trying to get Digory somewhere safe while Alice was who knew where. He pressed on his resolve hardening as he thought about Alice. His legs felt like they were on fire and made of stone at the same time. They were so heavy, yet they burned in a way he had never experienced before.
Aaron then fell to his knees. He slid Digory from his back, laying him down gently. Then he sat up straight and gasped for air. He didn’t know if he would ever get any air back into his lungs, but finally, his breathing became normal again. He was about to start the journey again, but at the thought of it, his whole body trembled, he needed rest, but he didn’t have time to rest. He was so tired and so hungry he felt like he could die. He was absolutely exhausted from walking and fighting. He had carried Digory all this way, and as strong as he was, he had his limits just like everyone else.
He looked over at Digory, who was still unconscious. Dig’s chest was slowly rising and falling with his shallow breaths. The bandages Aaron had applied to Dig’s wounds, were now covered in blood. Aaron sighed; would he ever get to rest? Digory needed a doctor, and Aaron was not a doctor, and he didn’t even know where the next town was. It could be miles away, or it could be days. But he would have to take this risk; he had to try and save his friend. His friend came first, and he came last. He wearily pulled Digory back onto his back and stood walking off into the forest once again.
He hoped he would come across a town soon and that someone could save Digory before it was too late. Aaron couldn’t stand the thought of losing anyone else he loved, not after what happened to Alice and Bella. He couldn’t lose anyone else.
After a long time of walking, Aaron came to a small town. It was mainly just little houses sprinkled along a roadway. Young kids were playing in the road and the field surrounding the town. On the porches of many of the houses, Aaron would see bucks and does lounging and talking in the fading light of the day. As he walked into the town it fell strangely quiet, and all eyes were on him. He tried to ask where the doctor was, but no one would answer him.
But then he heard a voice from behind him, a soft, pretty voice say, “I’m sorry, are you looking for a doctor? I can help with that; my names Cassady and I’m a medic.”
He turned around and looked at the doe that stood in front of him. She was tall and lean. Her fur was the color of straw and, her eyes were light grey with maybe a hint of blue or green. She was a pretty doe even though her face wore a worried expression. Cassady looked over his shoulder at Digory and said, with a hint of worry showing in her eyes, “We need to get him to a doctor and right away. Follow me.”
Aaron nodded at Cassady as he followed her through the streets.
I LOVE the variation on Cassie's name!! Cassady sounds so pretty! And I really hope Digory and Alice can be saved.
