The next morning, Uncle Wilfred brought breakfast in for her. "How was your day yesterday?" he asked.
"Good," Bailey replied, eating.
"Sorry about Helmer," Uncle Wilfred began.
"That was actually kind of cool," Bailey said, cutting him off. "You guys are good!"
Uncle Wilfred frowned. He was quiet for a couple of minutes, deep in thought. Once Bailey finished, he grabbed the tray. "I have a busy morning," Uncle Wilfred said. "So please stay here or go to the village green for today. Just try to avoid talking to many people."
"Okay," Bailey replied, nodding. After Uncle Wilfred left, she grabbed her cloak and mask and headed out. She climbed the stairs and entered the garden. She was still amazed by the beauty of the garden.
Bailey walked around smelling flowers. They all smelled so pretty and reminded her of Mother’s garden back home. A melancholy smile crossed her face. She then walked over and looked at the statues before walking back to Hallway Round.
Bailey walked up to the guard in front of the middle door, having seen Picket just go through that door.
“What do you want?” the guard, a brown buck who looked about a year older than her, asked, slight annoyance in his voice.
“O-oh,” Bailey stammered, “ I was just wondering what’s in there?”
“Oh, sorry,” the guard replied, smiling, “Didn’t mean to scare you. There is a bunch of craft stuff and trades in there.”
“Oooh!” Bailey said. “I love crafts! Do you know if there is any cross stitch stuff in there or woodworking?” Mother had occasionally done cross stitch, and Bailey was enamored with it. Father had done woodworking, but only rarely.
“I know there is woodworking of many types in there,” the guard answered, putting his hand under his chin in thought, “though I’m not sure if there is any cross stitch specifically. I know there are a lot of those types of crafts in there though. I never really get to spend much time in there, been too busy…” He stopped talking and stared off into the distance for a minute.
Bailey stood there awkwardly for a minute. “Can I go in?” she asked.
“Oh!” the guard replied, coming back from wherever his mind had wandered, “Of course. Have a good time!”
“Thanks!” Bailey replied, waving as she slipped through the door he held open. “Wow!” She was immediately in awe. The huge cavern was bustling with life. There were potters, woodworkers, and so many others in different stalls. It was amazing. She set out to find where Picket went.
Bailey turned a corner to see a door in the wall, with a small sign on it. She walked over to see what it said. It was a cross stitch sign that simply said “Cross Stitch: Supplies and Advice Within”.
Bailey cracked the door open and slipped inside. The room was small, and lit by a couple of torches. The walls were covered in shelves filled with material and frames. There was a wall that simply held bins full of different colors of floss. There were rows of shelves filled with designs and room to create your own.
“Wow!” Bailey breathed, walking slowly in a circle to take it all in.
“Can I help you?” a kindly voice asked. Bailey turned to see an elderly doe with fur that had a slight hint of red in it.
“I’m just looking right now,” Bailey replied, “Thank you though.”
“No problem,” the doe replied, “I’m Charlotte, so just call if you need anything.”
“Okay,” Bailey replied, “Thank you Mrs. Charlotte.” Bailey turned and walked over to the shelves filled with designs. She found a couple small ones that she couldn’t decide between.
“Mrs. Charlotte!” Bailey called.
“Yes,” Mrs. Charlotte replied, walking over, “What do you need?”
“I can’t decide which one to start with,” Bailey answered, holding up a flower design, a simple rabbit design, and one with a quote on it.
“Hm…” Mrs. Charlotte said, looking over them. “How about the flower?” she suggested, pointing to it. “Once you're done, you can come back and choose one of the others.”
“Okay, thanks!” Bailey replied, grabbing the materials.
“Do you need some help starting it?” Mrs. Charlotte asked.
“I think I got it,” Bailey said, “Thank you though.”
“No worries,” Mrs. Charlotte answered, walking to hold the door open for Bailey. “Once again if you need me…”
“I’ll find you here,” Bailey finished. “Thanks for all your help! I hope to come back soon.” She waved and walked out of the small room. A wave of noise washed over her as she reentered the large room. She walked to a corner that had some empty chairs and started the project. Well, tried to start the project. After setting up the fabric, she was having a hard time threading her needle.
Bailey sheepishly walked back to the small room.
“Back so soon?” Mrs. Charlotte asked.
“Um, I need some help threading my needle,” Bailey said, holding up the needle.
“Okay,” Mrs. Charlotte replied, taking the needle from her. “Let me show you a trick.” She took a small piece of paper and folded it so that it fit through the eye of the needle. She then laid the floss across the paper and slid the paper through the needle.
“Wow,” Bailey said, taking the needle back, “That makes it look so much easier.”
“How about you stay here so I can make sure you get going right?” Mrs. Charlotte suggested.
“If you don’t mind,” Bailey said. She had seen Mother do it several times, but being a bit of a perfectionist and having the trouble with the needle, she wanted to make sure she did it right.
“I would love to,” Mrs. Charlotte replied, leading her to a set of armchairs sitting in the corner. For about an hour, the two of them worked on the project, talking as well.
Suddenly, the door burst open. “Bailey!” Uncle Wilfred called.
“Yes?” Bailey asked guiltily.
“What were you thinking?” Uncle Wilfred said, annoyance in his voice. “Wandering around by yourself like that, especially when you don’t know where you are?”
“I-I saw Picket come in here,” Bailey stammered, staring at her feet.
“You still need to let someone know where you are going,” Uncle Wilfred retorted. “You could have…”
“Hush,” Mrs. Charlotte said, standing up. “Bailey is a very resourceful young lady. And she has been in here with me the entire time. She is really quite adept at cross stitch."
Bailey blushed slightly. "Thank you."
Uncle Wilfred sighed, running a hand over his head. "Just tell someone where you are going next time," he said, his voice now calm. "Well, it's time to go get you some lunch."
"You are welcome back here anytime," Mrs. Charlotte said, helping Bailey pick up her stuff.
"Thank you," Bailey replied. "If it's okay with you, Uncle Wilfred, I would like to come here a lot."
"That's fine," Uncle Wilfred conceded. "At least then I will know where to find you."
"Yeah!" Bailey exclaimed. She gave Mrs. Charlotte a hug. Mrs. Charlotte was surprised, but returned the hug. Bailey then turned to follow Uncle Wilfred, who was helping hold her stuff.
They headed back through Hallway Round and saw the guard again. “Did you find the cross stitch?” he asked as he held the door open for them.
“Yes I did Mr. …” Bailey started, but then stopped, not knowing his name.
“I’m Caleb,” the guard replied, “and no need for Mr.”
“Okay, Caleb,” Bailey answered, “I’m Bailey and I did this.” She held up the fabric.
“Is that a flower?” Caleb asked.
“Yeap! I think it’s a rose,” Bailey replied.
“Nice,” Caleb said. Then they just silently stood there for a second.
“Well,” Uncle Wilfred said, sensing the uncomfortableness, “I think we should go get lunch. Have a nice day Caleb!”
“You too, sir,” Caleb replied.
“Bye!” Bailey said, waving.
“Bye!” Caleb replied, returning to stand by his post.
Uncle Wilfred and Bailey grabbed lunch. Uncle Wilfred then left Bailey in her room to eat.
After she finished eating, she went back to work on her cross stitch. She had really started to get the hang of it.
That was a fun chapter to write! I like doing cross stitch, and I needed something for Bailey to be able to do by herself in her room, even though now it looks like she'll be spending a lot of time with Mrs. Charlotte. As always, any feedback would be great! I hope you like it.
I love that!!! Great job!!! I like how you include detail to make everything more vivid and imaginable! I love Mrs. Charlotte :) Excited for more!!
For Mrs. Charlotte I think it would be more accurate if you called her Aunty Charlotte, because it's a sign of respect in GE. But it's written very well! Nice job sis!
Nice job. Like your writing style.
