For anyone reading this, I just want to let you know that there is a prologue, so you will want to start there. It is in two parts (Prologue and Prologue Part 2).
Disclaimer: I'm honestly not sure what to put here, so... Apart from Bailey/Broken Arrow, I do not own the characters. Um... other legal stuff... If anyone has a better way to phrase this part, please let me know so I can update it.
The years past and Broken Arrow stayed with the rabbits. She had mostly forgotten about the events that had brought her there. Whittle and Sween took care of her as one of their own, and Whittle only called her Broken Arrow when she got in big trouble, like the time she flew down the stairs and ran into Picket, almost breaking his arm and a vase. That was a mess! Otherwise, she was Bailey, and they were Mother and Father.
The only thing that she had from before she came to live with them was a dagger. The handle was wrapped with fabric and she had a small sheath that Whittle had made for her. She kept it on her whenever she went out to fly, but otherwise, it was in her dresser, hidden under a couple of shirts.
One nice spring day, Bailey was out in the field playing Starseek with Picket and Heather. Picket was ahead two games and neither Heather or Bailey had been able to get an edge on him. One more game and Picket would win the match. Picket threw the star hard and it sailed far into the field. As soon as it touched down, they were off. Bailey ran low to the ground, hoping it would work better than her earlier tactic. She ran fast, only looking up once or twice to confirm her position. She knew she was closing in on the star, so she glanced up to see where the other two were. They were ahead of her by a little bit, their eyes locked on the star.
Bailey threw herself into one last effort to pass them, but Heather got to the star first. Unable to stop, first Picket, then Bailey ran into her. They rolled a couple of times. Heather jumped up first, star in hand. Bailey sat up and Picket levered up on an elbow.
“That,” Picket started, panting to catch his breath, “was amazing.” Bailey nodded, still trying to catch her breath.
“It was,” Heather agreed, also panting, “Closest finish ever, Picket.”
“Yeah,” he agreed, grinning. “That was even closer than the infamous Snow Match of last winter.” Bailey and Heather laughed, remembering the match. It had been so cold, and the match had ended with Bailey barely winning by one match, and only by a whisker. She had to dive into a snowbank to get the star that round. They had come in dripping with snow.
“Remember how Mother got mad at us for dripping on her rug, saying it was rare or something?” Bailey asked, her smile a mile wide.
“Oh yeah,” Heather said, giggling, “That was not good.” Heather looked at the sky over the East Wood. The clouds were purple and pulsing with light. A distant roll of thunder signaled the storm’s approach, and it was moving quickly.
“Great match, Heather,” Picket said, standing up. “You were going faster than I’ve ever seen you.”
“Yeah, that was awesome!” Bailey said.
“Thanks,” Heather replied, “But you still have the lead, Picket.”
“If you guys don’t mind,” Bailey said, “I’m going to head in though. I’m tired and I want to get back to my Sherlock Holmes book.”
“Okay,” Heather replied, “See you in a couple of minutes.”
Bailey turned towards the house. “Let it fly,” she heard Picket say as she slipped through the door. She went upstairs and grabbed the book off her dresser before curling up in her bed to read. She was in the middle of The Hound of the Baskervilles and couldn’t wait to see how Sherlock solved it.
A loud crash of thunder startled her. It sounded like it was close. She glanced out the window, but couldn’t see very far because of the rain that had just started. The next flash illuminated two rabbits, Heather and Picket!
I hope you liked it! Chapters 1-3 (I'll post 2 and 3 later) were originally going to be part of one chapter, but then it ended up being long, so I split it up. Again, any feedback would be great!
