So, I decided that with the new book (hopefully) coming soon, I would make a post about why I think Massie Burnson is the Pilgrim. Enjoy!
Fur Color. The Pilgrim is described as having brown fur with silver accents. If you look at the pictures of Massie, it looks like he has dark fur, with lighter areas around his eyes and ears.
The Pilgrim brought True Blue. Massie came over from Golden Coast, where they must have had True Blue, and brought some over to Seddleton. Therefore, Massie would have access to the True Blue
His arrows. The Pilgrim had arrows that were lighter than normal arrows, and the heads were black and sparkly. Also, one managed to go through two raptors. Compare this to the StarSword. It's black and sparkly, lighter than expected, and "It will never break until all the breaking is broken." So it seems pretty clear to me that the arrows are made of fragments of the star. Okay, back to the origin of the arrows. Massie saw the StarSword, I'm sure. He would have had the opportunity to make his arrows. I have no idea how he got the star fragments, but..... I'm not S.D. Smith, he can do what he wants
The Pilgrim is a friend of the royal family. As Lady Glen says, "He's an old friend." Emma: "A friend of Father's?" Lady Glen: "No, your father never had the honor, I'm afraid. But trust me when I say that his loyalty to the cause and to our family goes back a long time and runs deep" (If I quoted that wrong, I'm sorry. I'm too lazy to go get my book right now.) Now think about Massie's relation to the royal family. I mean, at this point, he's practically the babysitter! So, I think that speaks for his loyalty.
His recognition of Helmer. Helmer: "Have we met before, my Lord?" Pilgrim: I'm no lord, Helmer there. And no, we haven't met. But you remind me of an old friend." The "Old friend" he's thinking of could be Brindle Cove, the original Helmer. This seems to be backed up by Pilgrim calling him "Helmer there" as Whitson does to... everyone.
The Pilgrim closes his eyes before he shoots. In Ember's End, it's mentioned that the Pilgrim closes both eyes before he shoots. In the picture of Massie in TBSoK, he's closing one eye. Over a hundred years or so, this habit could have grown to him closing both eyes.
He's old. The Pilgrim is described as "obviously old" and having even older eyes (thanks, wiki, for that description!) A hundred years have passed between Whitson's days and the war of all Natalia. That would be plenty of time for him to get old.
Also, I just realized that there's a location named after him. I wonder why that is... maybe we'll find out in Prince Lander and the Dragon War!
I think that's it.... if I think of anything else, I'll mention it in the comments.
Thank you for reading my rambling.
Also, these are just my opinions, so feel free to disagree.
And thanks to the Green Ember wiki for information on the Pilgrim and the StarSword.
Have a great day!
I feel like a hundred years is a bit long, wouldn't Massie have died of old age by Ember's End? That's a really long time for someone to live and still be able to do what the Pilgrim does.
