What's Up With Whitson Mariner's Name?

Does anyone know why Whitson's descendants didn't take the name Mariner? Did King Jupiter's ancestors conquer them and take the throne? I'm confused.

I actually have a theory that there may have been a Royal in Akolan, but he would have been part of Whitson’s line.
