I worked as an assistant for Lord Rake, and later, I left Cloud Mountain to work for Lord Ramnor. I hated to leave my sister behind, but she was grown now, and I knew I had to give my all in the upcoming war.

Yes. War. It was coming quickly to us, and I wanted to be prepared. Rabbitkind would give their all, and many of us would give their lives. I was ready to be one of those. For my sister to live in a world of peace. For my father, to make him proud of how he had taught me. For my dear mother, who had never loved war, but would have done whatever was needed to protect those she loved.

I thought I was prepared.

I slid a report onto the top of a growing pile, glancing out the open door with a frown when a strange scraping noise came from the hall. Ignoring it, I continued sorting the papers from the previous night's council. I hadn't heard much about it, but I knew the prince had left for Kingston to arrange a meeting with the other citadel lords. I wished Prince Smalls well, for Lord Ramnor seemed determined to make everything a difficulty.

A scream from outside the door interrupted my thoughts.

My head jerked up as a shadow fell over the table. The last thing I saw were slavering teeth and sooty fur, before a painful strike sent me into oblivion.
