Gant walked down the dusty street of Akolan. One soldier on his left, and one on his right. He heard the screams behind him, and he heard when they stopped. Good. There would be one less traitor to oppose King Morbin. One less chance that rabbit kind would be dashed to pieces in the predator's talon. Rabbit scurried out of his way. Many hid inside nearby houses. A sweeper was coming toward them, apparently not seeing the Longtreaders approaching. She had a smile one her face when she looked up, but it turned almost instantly to horror. Her hands clinched the broom and her feet seemed to forget how to walk. The Longtreaders stopped "Out of the way bird bait" yelled the buck on Gant's left. "Or I cut you down!" The terrified doe turned to run but tripped over her broom and fell into the dust. She crawled to the side of the road to try to get out of the bucks way. On her knees. Like rabbits should be. They continued on until they came to District 6. The watch guards saluted as they passed through the gates. The streets were less dusty here. Grant dismissed his escort with a wave of his hand and headed to his office. He walked into his nice clean quarters and sat down in the soft chair. A pile of papers sat on his desk. He picked them up in disgust and began to leaf through the reports. A rapping came on the door. "Enter" Answer Gant glad of the distraction Lieutenant Breggan marched into the room. Behind him came two other Longtreaders dragging a young buck who was given his captors a ruff time even though it looked like he had been badly beaten. Gant stood up from his chair. " What would be the problem Lieutenant Breggan?" The Lieutenant saluted "Commandant, this youngling was informed upon by one of his classmates. It appears sir that he is one of the rabbits responsible for the disappearance of the younglings that were to join Morbin for his feast two days ago. There was a doe also with him, but this youngling fended off Lieutenant Jimb's soldiers long enough for her to escape. We brought him to you for questioning sir." The Lieutenant saluted again. Commandant Gant walked around his desk. He looked into the younglings eyes. They glared back at him threogh swollen slits. Gant glared back "So you were betrayed by one of your own class mates? How unfortunate. It Does seem that our kind has a knack for doing that don't we?" The younglings just glared. One of the guards punches him in the side. "Answer him!" The small buck winced at the pain, but didn't cry out. He looked Gant straight in the eyes again and spoke in a low but surprisingly strong voice. "Yes sir we do." He paused, "BUT IT WILL NOT BE SO IN THE MENDED WO-!" Gant stumbled backwards grabbing at the desk. One of the younglings guard's clubbed his prisoner over the head which sent him into a crumpled heap. Gant was breathing hard. "Take him to the prison, and make sure you chain him to the wall." The rabbits left and the Commandant stumbled back to his chair. He was shaking. In such a short speech what had stirred him up so much? Perhaps, it was that the youngling had reminded him of himself. So many years ago. Except, apparently, his fire hadn't been snuffed out after he had been betrayed. betrayed. Stop! Stop thinking about the past! What was the younglings name? He couldn't remember. Slowly Gant arose and walked toward the door. He had to find out what the little warrior's name was. The one who still believed in the Mended Wood.
