Kayti
Kyter woke with a start. He sat straight up in bed, his heart racing and his mind feeling flustered. He had dreamed it again. He had dreamed of being trapped and then suddenly of someone soaring like a bird. It wasn’t him that had been soaring. No, it was someone else, someone he didn’t know. Someone he would never know. Sometimes his dreams felt as if they were more than dreams. As if he was seeing something that was to be but had not yet been.
Kyter shook his head as he got out of bed and dressed. He didn’t like to think too long on his dreams, for they always left him with a weird feeling. The feeling that he was small and powerless and he knew, in a way, that was true. He grabbed his belt and began to strap it on, struggling with his mangled hand. After a minute, he threw the belt on the bed and gave up, sighing in defeat. He couldn’t even put his own belt on now. He looked at his twisted hand and wanted to scream. It wasn’t just the hand though, it was everything.
Luciana was leaving today. King Whitson had announced last night that they would be leaving. All of them. Whitson, Lillie, Lander, Massie, Luciana, and even Forsythe would be leaving. But he would stay. He had to stay. Kingston was his home, and one day would be his responsibility. His father had said it was time he started to learn how to care for that responsibility. So, while Forsythe got to leave and go to First Warren to travel and see the world while mapping it out, Kyter got to stay. He would be stuck doing nothing.
He crossed to his desk and sat down, wanting to write something to give to Luciana and maybe even one to give to Forsythe. Something to take his mind off the gloominess of being left out of the adventure.
Forsythe stood at the prow of the ship beside King Whitson. He had never thought he would meet the king. He had never thought he would become friends with the king and his family. But never, not even in his wildest dreams had he thought he would travel with the king to First Warren.
Once in First Warren, he was to begin training as a cartographer. One day he would map out all of Natalia; that was his goal, to be the greatest cartographer the world had ever known.
“What will you sign as your name,” King Whitson asked, as his eyes roved over the land. “Every cartographer has a name in the corner of their maps, a first and last name to identify them. So, what will yours be? Your family doesn’t have a last name yet.”
Forsythe thought about it for a minute, not sure. What would he put as his last name? What would be something that spoke to who he was or what he wanted to do?
“Oh, I almost forgot,” King Whitson reached into his tunic and drew out a letter. “Your friend Kyter told me to give you this.”
Forsythe took the paper and unfolded it, then read.
Dear Forsythe,
It is hard for me to think of you leaving. We have always been such pals; I will miss you so much. But I am happy that you will get to fulfill your dream. You will tread the world your strides will long leave their marks on our history. In fact, I believe your name will go down in history.
So, my long-treading friend, as you begin your journey, do not forget the young buck you left behind. Be proud of who you are. Take care of Luciana for me, please, and go seize the world. Or better yet, map it! You better get to work long-treader.
Always your goofy, hard-headed, friend Kyter Blackstar
Forsythe lowered the letter, a smile on his face as he shook his head at Kyter’s way of saying goodbye.
“So, what will your name be?” King Whitson asked again, noticing he was done reading.
Forsythe looked down at the letter, one word standing out to him, long-treader. He would be a longtreader. He would be walking great distances to map the world as Kyter had said he would be longtreading. He smiled at Kyter’s way with words and then looked at King Whitson as he said, “Longtreader, the name will be Forsythe Longtreader.”
Luciana waved to the rabbits on the dock as the Promise pulled out. She would miss everyone. But mostly, she would miss Kyter. She was excited to go home and see Avalon and First Warren, but she had enjoyed her time at Kingston. She stood at the back of the boat, gazing back at the mountains and the land behind.
“Luc.” She looked over to see Lander smiling at her.
She smiled back. Lander then held something toward her and said, “Kyter Blackstar said to give this to you once the ship had pulled out.”
Luciana took the offered letter and unfolded it.
Dear Luciana,
I have never written a letter to a doe, sorry if this comes out wrong. I want to thank you for helping take care of me in the days of my recovery. I want to thank you for being my friend. I want to thank you for how kind you were to my mother and sister and how you took care of Jonston. I don’t know how to say this. I know we are very young. In fact, most would say too young to think about such things, but…
Luciana, I will be waiting here for you, if you’ll have me one day. I will be here. Moments ago, being stuck in Kingston seemed like the worst thing to me. I wanted adventure like you and Forsythe, but now it is the best thing for you will always know where to find me. I love you, Luciana. I have known that we would be great friends since the moment we met. But one day, I hope we will be more than friends.
Your humble friend and servant Kyter Blackstar
Luciana hugged the letter to her chest and looked at Lander, smiling. He smiled down at her as he said, “So what are you going to do when we get home, Luc?”
“Dream of the day when I’ll come back to Kingston,” Luciana said, watching the horizon slowly disappear as she thought of Kyter.
“Why would you come back? What about the birds?” Lander asked, looking at her and smiling an unusual smile.
“Oh, the birds will always be there, I guess, but the Blackstars’ have always proven they know how to deal with birds. But the reason I would come back would be to marry Kyter Blackstar,” Luciana said, sighing as she added, “We were made for each other. I can feel it. Mark my words Lander as sure as you will be king one day, I will be Lady Luciana Blackstar. You’ll see.”
Lander shook his head, smiled, and walked off. Luciana didn’t care. Wait and see, she told herself again, wait and see. Then she whispered, “Lady Luciana Blackstar has a nice ring to it.”
So, this story ends, and another begins. Kyter and Luciana would govern Kingston together, and their descendants continue to govern it to this day. There are many more stories, that could be told of Kyter and Luciana, but I have run out of time. For now, know they were happy together.
As for Forsythe Longtreader. He did just what he set out to do, and to this day, his maps are still used all across Natalia.
Farewell, my friends, and I hope you enjoyed this story Of Blackstars and Birds.
