This is not so much as "Fan Fiction" as it is "Fan Creation".
Here are recipes that I have made, in honor of the Green Ember books and the food the rabbits have eaten within! ^.^
Recipe for Akolan Potato Soup
Inspired by The Green Ember book series by S.D. Smith
Makes one pot
Ingredients:
1 Onion, diced
2-3 stalks celery, diced
3 carrots, diced
6 potatoes, also diced
7 cups of water
3 tablespoons of flour
1 cup coconut oil or olive oil
salt, pepper, various spices
parsley
Instructions:
Sauté the Onion, Carrot, and Celery in the pot.
Add the Potatoes & cook for 5 minutes.
Add the water and boil for 10 minutes.
Mix together the flour and oil until they are thoroughly mixed together, then add to soup. Cook for 5 minutes.
Quickly blend half the soup with Immersion Blender until partially creamy.
Add spices to taste, and chop up the parsley finely before adding to the soup.
Yet another recipe to enjoy with family, friends, maybe even some rabbits! This recipe may be delicious, and like before you can add anything you like, and let’s hope for the release of all those rabbits oppressed in Akolan. I kind of made this recipe to honor the memories of those lost and living in slavery. Maybe this can give you a viewpoint of what most of their meals are like.
Recipe for Natalia Vegetable Pies
Inspired by The Green Ember book series by S.D. Smith
“So what happens now?”
“You eat some of this delicious vegetable pie.” He said, making a plate for her and one for her mother.
“I don’t usually like to eat…” she began, “only one piece.”
Picket laughed and piled three more of the round pies on her plate. “Happy now?” he asked. Weezie nodded, cutting into the first golden pie.
Makes 2-3
Ingredients:
Dough:
1/2 cup of flourpinch of salt1/2 teaspoon of sugar1/3 cup of water1 tablespoon of Arrowroot Powder1/4 cup coconut oil (or the best quality oil you can find)
Filling:
1 baked potatosmall handful of mixed vegetables (Green beans, peas, carrot chunks, corn)Seasonings (Basil, Oregano, Rosemary, Salt, Pepper)
Instructions:
-Boil the potato in water until soft.
While the potato is boiling:
-Put all the ingredients except the water and Arrowroot Powder in a mixing bowl.
-Put the Arrowroot Powder in the water and mix methodically. Do not stop mixing, or little clumps of Arrowroot will form and be sprinkled throughout the dough. Trust me, it’s gross.
-Once the Arrowroot is thoroughly mixed in, add it into the mixing bowl and stir it all together.
-After a while, knead the dough with your hands, and add more flour as needed until there’s little to no sticking. Set dough aside in the freezer.
-Grab some of the mixed vegetables and put it in a small bowl to defrost. If the potato is done, take it off the heat and let it cool.
-Take the dough out of the freezer and work it with your hands. Take out a muffin tin and make little cups of dough inside each cup; make sure plenty of dough is left over to put on top.
-Mash the potato in the defrosted mixed vegetables and season to taste with the suggested seasonings up above.
-Pour some of the veggie mixture in each dough cup, filling it a little over the top. Then, use remaining dough to cover the top and pinch it together with the rest to completely seal the filling inside.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and bake for 25-30 minutes.
And there you are! Some Natalia-style, completely Vegan Vegetable Pies! You can add anything you like, for example if you have a favorite vegetable or seasoning you want to add to it, feel free to! I personally enjoy leaving the skin on the potatoes, but if you want to take it off, then I’m not stopping you. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I did, and are happy about being able to taste something straight from the book!
