Fleck sighed in joy and relief as he entered the little house .
The space was warm and cozy, a fire lit in the fireplace sent sparks happily crackling around it’s stone features. A tantalizing smell wafted from the kitchen. Fleck’s stomach rumbled. The wind howled outside. Shrieking across the wooden door frame. Some cold air slipped through the cracks in the wood walls, but no one seemed to notice.
“Hi- hi.” Fleck stammered, noticing everyone was looking at him.
“You must have come a long way.” The kindly grey doe said.
“From Kingston.” Fleck said. The white buck must have noticed the tinge of sadness in Fleck’s voice. Looking around the cozy home, it made Fleck realize what he’d lost in Kingston.
“Do you have family?” The buck asked, gently.
“My cousins here, are all that’s left. I used to have a twin brother. And my parents…” Fleck trailed off, lost in thought.
“The attack on Kingston.” The doe said, frowning.
“Aye.” Fleck said.
“I’m Snoden, and this is Airen. Those youngsters are Weezie and Layra,” The buck said.
“hi.” Fleck said.
“You bucks must be hungry.” Sno said, motioning toward where Joe and Levi sat warming themselves at the fire.
“We are.” Joe said. Airen hurried into the kitchen, soon emerging with several bowls of steaming soup. It looked delicious.
