Eileen pulled a whistle from her dress and blew on it. A soft eerie noise escaped it before she stuffed it back in her pocket. She ground her feet into the dirt as she got ready to run. Then she counted to three in her mind.
One…
Two….
A loud echoing screech filled the air as she yelled out, “Three.” Then she ran as fast as she could, her heart pumping in her chest. She then threw herself off the edge of the cliff and fell. That moment of panic surrounded her, as she fell with nothing beneath her. Then she landed on the large birds. The bird shot upwards then, soaring into the high star-filled sky.
The wind blew through her long shiny gray fur with whiteish-gray tips. The bird kept going higher and higher, she held on as the wind became harsher and the air dropped in temperature. The wind beat her face just as surely as the bird’s wings beat the air. She shivered at the chill that crept through her clothes.
This was her favorite part of being on Lord Nakaw, and the Captain’s side flying on a bird was amazing. She loved this part because it made her feel so free. She felt like she could do anything in the world, and she probably could. She was up here while other rabbits were down there. She could soar while they had to grovel. This was the best place in the world.
She looked back over her shoulder; and saw that the buck she had been fighting was looking up at the sky. She remembered the look of sadness on his face when the doe had been taken. Tears had filled his eyes and rolled unashamed down his cheeks. She felt bad for the buck for some reason. She guessed it was because she knew how he felt. She had had everything she loved taken away from her. A sad feeling crept through her as she looked away from the buck.
Eileen shook her head; she needed to pull herself together. She didn’t want anyone to know she was sad. She could not be sad, she had to be strong. She had to be a warrior, although it was hard sometimes. Tears almost filled her eyes, but she fought them back.
Ahead she saw a large bird with a rabbit with reddish fur; it was her sister. She looked at her sister and smiled, but her smile wasn’t real, and she saw that her sister knew that.
“Are you okay my sister?”
She looked into her sister's sapphire blue eyes that seemed to radiate a light of their own. Her sister was a beautiful doe with her long reddish fur, bright blue eyes, and a charming spirit. But she was pretty too, they both were.
Eileen took her violet and blue eyes off of her sister as she said quietly, “I think I’ll be fine. I mean, I’m not sure, but I think I will be.” Her bird flew in front of her sister, and she saw the smoke of the camp not too far away.
The Captain had wasted no time in setting up a camp, which was fine with her. She was tired from fighting earlier, and she just wanted to rest. Her bird dropped down, banking hard in the wind as it landed. She jumped down from the bird's back and almost fell on her face, but she caught herself. Thank goodness, she thought that was the last thing she needed.
She was about to walk over to the campfire when she heard a scream; it was a doe’s scream. She looked to see who it was, and automatically her eyes rested on a pretty doe. The doe’s fur was the color of molasses, and it was long and shiny; the doe had golden eyes, which were large with fright and pain.
She watched as Arrow, the buck who had accompanied them, grabbed the doe roughly by the arm and dragged her across the ground. The doe’s left arm was covered in blood and still bleeding badly. She also noticed that the doe’s foot was hurt, no wonder the doe had screamed.
The doe tried to wiggle free from Arrow’s hold, but she couldn’t. He had his arms tightly around the doe’s waist as he dragged her over to a tree.
Eileen heard the doe yell out, “Let go of me you, freak! LET ME GO!”
Eileen chuckled. She liked this doe, she had spunk. Eileen kept her eyes on the doe and Arrow. She watched as the doe elbowed Arrow in the stomach. Arrow let go of the doe as he gasped for air, and the doe cried out in pain as she fell to the ground. Eileen shook her head, spunk but not a well thought out plan to go with it.
Two other bucks came over then, and grabbed the doe by her arms, and pulled her to her feet. The doe’s eyes filled with tears that poured down her face. Eileen watched as the buck’s pinned the doe’s arms behind her and tied them before dragging her away. The doe still fought, and Eileen shook her head, even she, fighter that she was, knew when she was beaten, and this doe was beaten.
She was about to head to the campfire once again when she heard someone call her name from behind. She knew it was the Captain, and she turned to face him, her long dress swishing around her ankles. He was right behind her, and now that she had turned, they stood face to face. “Yes Captain,” she said, taking a step back.
The Captain smiled at her then said, “You did a good job today, but I saw that you didn’t get the two bucks as I asked, and for that, I’m disappointed in you. But as I said, you did good, so you and your sister have my trust now. You just need to prove yourselves to Lord Nakaw, and to do that you need to get those bucks. You and your sister will do this in the morning. I will send a different, more reliable buck with you…” the Captain looked with disdain at Arrow, who was still recovering from the doe who had elbowed him.
The Captain then shook his head and added, “I know this buck, and he is an amazing fighter he will help you greatly. You will return to me and Lord Nakaw with the prisoners. If you do not return with the prisoners, you will be dismissed from the group or put to death. Lord Nakaw will decide your fate. I wish you luck.”
Eileen took a deep breath; she could do this. She had confidence in herself. Eileen nodded her head to the Captain, she had nothing to say to him, at least not right now. She turned then and walked to the campfire and sat down.
She watched the massive flames climb high into the sky, then drop low. They danced across the wood and shifted with the wind. She watched the fire till her eyes felt heavy, and then she laid down to go to sleep. But as Eileen tried to sleep, she wondered how she would get the last two prisoners so she could prove to them that she was indeed a warrior.
Poor Alice! She was the only one captured? How terrible.
I like Eileen a lot!
WOw, this was so so very good as always. I love that Eileen has clear weaknesses - it makes her all the more relatable!!! Also, OH NO. I think I know that doe... goodness. I can't wait for the next chapter!!! As @Hazel Tree rabbitry said, excellent writing!!!!
Excellent writing!!! I hope they donn't kill Eileen, she seems great
