Disclaimer: I'm honestly not sure what to put here, so... Apart from Bailey/Broken Arrow, I do not own the characters. Um... other legal stuff... If anyone has a better way to phrase this part, please let me know so I can update it.
Bailey didn't know what to do. She saw the outlines of Mother and Father, and Baby Jacks. She circled, high enough to go unnoticed by the wolves below. She wanted to run down and help, but there were too many wolves. She would probably just get herself and her family hurt, or worse.
Bailey turned, heading towards Seven Mounds. She hadn't seen Heather or Picket, so they might have been out picking berries. She hoped they were. She didn't want to lose the only family she knew.
Landing in front of the small opening in the third mound, Bailey glanced inside. It was too dark to see if anyone was inside. "Picket? Heather?" she said quietly.
"Bailey!" Picket exclaimed, coming to the opening, "How did you not get captured?"
"I was out flying this morning," she replied. "Is Heather with you?"
Picket's face fell. "No. She stayed back to give me a chance to get here. She said she'd meet up with me here. I hope she makes it."
"I do too," Bailey agreed. "You stay here. I'm going to see if Heather is near here." She flew up and was about to fly towards Evergreen Row when she saw Heather running at full speed towards the Mounds. Relief flooded Bailey, but was quickly replaced by dread. Chasing Heather were two wolves, a young one running in a frenzy, and an older one who was much more calm. She noticed that the older wolf only had one eye and it was red. She shuddered, not quite knowing why.
Thinking fast, Bailey flew and waited on top of the third mound. She could see them approaching, but they wouldn't see her. Heather would be able to make it to the mound, but Bailey was worried if she would be able to fit.
Heather made it to the opening and tried to slide in, but couldn't. She was stuck. "No!" Heather shouted.
"No," Bailey breathed. She braced herself to jump down, but decided to wait a second and hopefully take down the wolf in the process.
"Stuck, are we?" the older wolf said, a sneer on his face. The younger wolf went to lunge at Heather, but the older wolf barked an order and he stepped back.
The older wolf must be the leader, Bailey thought.
"Ending this little troublemaker will be my pleasure, soldier," the older wolf snarled, "Fall back."
"How about you fall back," Bailey growled, landing between the captain and Heather. She arched her back and put her wings out to make her look bigger.
Surprise crossed his face, probably from her appearing out of nowhere. "Well, well," the captain said, smirking, "What do we have here? Are you lost, little girl?"
"I'm not scared of you," Bailey replied, hoping he didn't see right through her.
"You should be," he said, "I'm Redeye Garlackson, feared by all who know me. Even some of the Lords of Prey are scared of me." Bailey held her ground, growling. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way."
"I'm not letting you hurt my sister," Bailey replied.
"Hard way it is," Redeye replied, then he lunged. Bailey jumped, dodging his attack and then landing on his back. He quickly flipped her off and then kicked her in the stomach. Bailey gasped, stood up, and lunged at him.
Redeye just stepped to the side and bit down hard on her shoulder. Bailey shouted in pain. It was all but over. After hitting her a couple of times to make sure she wasn’t going to attack again, Redeye threw her against a rock. She tried to get up.
“I wouldn’t move if I were you,” the younger wolf said, snickering. Bailey tried to get up anyway, but the wolf barely pushed her and she fell back down.
"I'll deal with you after I kill your sister here," Redeye said, turning back to Heather. "This is the end, little rabbit. Thank you. The sport was… exhilarating."
But, just before Redeye could kill Heather, a gray rabbit flew out of nowhere and knocked her into the safety of the third mound. Father? Bailey thought, but quickly realized it wasn’t. He had almost gotten intercepted by the other wolf, but a small white rabbit had tackled it.
Unfortunately, the gray rabbit didn't make it unscathed. Redeye scratched his back as he flew past. The gray rabbit turned around to face Redeye, sword in hand. Bailey turned to watch the white rabbit. The wolf had just scratched his wrist, causing him to drop the sword. The wolf then chucked it into the woods before shoving the rabbit to the ground, standing over him.
The wolf was about to attack the rabbit. Bailey had to do something. She gathered her strength, and tackled the wolf. They rolled a couple of times before Bailey hopped up.
“Back down,” she said, trying to hide her exhaustion.
“You don’t have the energy to fight me,” the wolf said, laughing. He lunged at her. Bailey dodged and scratched the wolf’s shoulder as he passed her. “You think that hurt?” the wolf said, laughing hysterically, “I didn’t even feel it!”
He lunged at her again, this time aiming for the shoulder that Redeye bit. When Bailey went to dodge, she put pressure on that arm and collapsed. She tried to get up, but the wolf held her down.
“Thanks for the entertainment,” he said, grinning. Bailey struggled, but to no avail.
I hope Heather and Picket are okay, she thought, closing her eyes and bracing for the end.
Hope you like it! I'm working on the fifth chapter right now and hope to post it tonight or tomorrow morning. As always, any feedback would be great!
