Disclaimer: I'm honestly not sure what to put here, so... Apart from Bailey/Broken Arrow, I do not own the characters. Um... other legal stuff... If anyone has a better way to phrase this part, please let me know so I can update it.
The next morning, Bailey got up and grabbed her cross stitch. She headed back up to Hallway Round.
On her way, she thought about the previous night. Heather and Picket had come over for dinner and they had talked. Heather talked about some sort of calling ceremony and was happy. But once Picket started talking about Helmer and his new apprenticeship, Heather's mood soured. Bailey was excited, and slightly worried for Picket, and it was good to see him happy.
When Bailey got to Hallway Round, she didn't recognize any of the bucks guarding the doors. "Excuse me, could I go in?" she asked the buck in front of the door in the middle.
The buck grunted and opened the door for her.
"Thank you," Bailey said as she slipped through. She quickly made her way back to the cross stitch room.
"Bailey?" Mrs. Charlotte said.
"Yes Mrs. Charlotte?" Bailey replied.
"You can call me Aunty," she said, "and how is your project coming along?"
"Really well," Bailey answered, showing her. "I worked on it more last night."
"You are doing really well," Aunty Charlotte said, examining her work. "Maybe the next project will be something a little more complicated. I have one in mind."
"Ooh!" Bailey said, "Can I see it?"
"After we finish this one," Aunty Charlotte said, leading her back to the chairs in the back.
They worked for about an hour and finished the first project. "Now that you finished that, make sure to put your initials and the date," Aunty Charlotte directed.
"Okay," Bailey said. After she finished, she took it off the frame and looked at it, confused. "What do I do with it now, Aunty?"
"You can take it to Master Turner," Aunty Charlotte said. "He can design a frame for you. I would show you, but there are a couple things I need to do."
"Okay, see you later," Bailey said, waving and heading out the door. She walked towards the middle of the giant cavern, having gotten directions from an older buck.
"Master Turner?" Bailey asked.
"Yes?" an older gray buck asked, turning to face her. "I am he of whom you speak."
"Aunty Charlotte said you could make me a frame," Bailey said, holding up her cross stitch.
"So Charlotte sent you," Master Turner said, half to himself, "Haven't heard from her in ages. Would you like to help me make your frame?"
"Can I?" Bailey asked excitedly.
"Of course," Master Turner replied, "Just don't break anything." He walked over to a shelf full of wood. He chose a reddish piece and then walked over to a table covered in tools.
"What are you doing?" Bailey asked, watching him as he worked with the wood.
"Well," Master Turner started, "You have to get the shape of the frame that you want…" He kept talking and working, explaining everything. Bailey listened intently, but there was so much stuff she barely could keep up.
After about an hour, Master Turner finished. Bailey had helped him hold some stuff, but he had done most of the work. Bailey centered the fabric in the frame and Master Turner put the back on.
"That looks rather nice," Master Turner said, admiring the frame.
"Yeah I like it," Bailey agreed. "I'll have to come here more often."
Master Turner's eyes widened. "How often?" he asked, slight concern in his voice. He didn't particularly want a young doe wandering around all the time.
"I don't know," Bailey replied, completely missing his tone of voice. "Maybe once or twice a week. Depends on how quickly I finish these projects."
"Okay," Master Turner said, mostly to himself, "That's not that bad. Run along now child."
"Bye," Bailey said, waving as she turned to head back to show Aunty Charlotte. She decided to take the long way and wandered among the many stalls, seeing what they did. There were potters and masons, blacksmiths and woodworkers. It was so amazing the variety under one roof.
Bailey was paying so much attention to the trades around her, that she didn't notice a golden brown buck. She bumped into him, dropping her stuff.
"Sorry Pick…" she started to say, but then stopped when she realized it was a different buck.
"Name's Kyle," the buck said, smirking. There were a couple other bucks with him and one picked up her cross stitch.
"What's this?" the tan buck teased. "Is it a flower for a crush?"
"No, give it back," Bailey replied, jumping up to try and grab it. The buck held it higher over his head before tossing it to Kyle.
"Looks like someone wants her flower back," Kyle teased, "but she's too short." He tossed it to another buck in the group. It took everything in her for Bailey not to fly and grab it.
"Hey," a brown buck called from behind the group, "Give Bailey back her cross stitch."
"Ooh!" Kyle said in a babyish voice. "Looks like we found her boyfriend who the flower is for."
Caleb's face remained calm, but Bailey blushed and was glad it was hidden by her mask. "I told you it's not for a crush!" she said, anger on the edges of her voice. She jumped to grab it again, but the buck threw it.
Caleb caught it and handed it back to Bailey. "Now leave her alone," he commanded.
"Or what?" Kyle said defiantly, "You'll tell Pacer? We were only joking around."
"Well, it wasn't very funny," Bailey said. She started to walk away, but Kyle caught her arm.
"I was just joking, honest," he said, all hint of joking gone from his voice. Bailey just turned and walked away, followed by Caleb.
"You okay?" Caleb asked.
"I'm fine," Bailey replied, "they weren't going to hurt me. I'm just glad they didn't break this." She ran a hand over the frame.
"Looks nice," Caleb said. "Did you make that?"
"Yeah," Bailey said, a smile on her face, "I just finished it this morning. I actually was heading back over to Aunty Charlotte to show her the frame."
"Master Turner help you with that?" Caleb asked.
"Help is an understatement," Bailey answered, chuckling, “He basically did all of it.”
Caleb laughed. “Sounds like him.”
They arrived at the cross stitch room. Caleb opened the door for her and they walked in. “Hello again, Bailey,” Aunty Charlotte said, setting down a project she had been working on. “And hello young buck. Did Master Turner help you?”
“Yes, Aunty Charlotte,” Bailey replied, handing her the finished project.
“This turned out nice,” Aunty Charlotte said, inspecting it.
“Yeah, I like it,” Bailey said.
“Do you want to start a new one?” Aunty Charlotte asked, handing it back.
“Yes!” Bailey said, excited.
"Okay," Aunty Charlotte replied, walking back towards the design shelves. "How about this one?" she asked, picking up a pattern. It was a slightly more complicated cross stitch pattern, this time with a couple chess pieces on it.
"Ooh!" Bailey said, taking the pattern to look at it. "This looks cool. What is it though?"
"Chess," Caleb said, then blushed. "Sorry, Aunty, I didn't mean to talk over you."
"No problem young buck," Aunty Charlotte. "Would you like to explain it to her?"
"Yes," Caleb replied. "Well, chess is a strategy game where you try to use your pieces to capture your opponent's king. It's a lot of fun if you want to try it sometime."
"That sounds fun, Caleb!" Bailey said, "maybe after we're done here." Caleb smiled.
About three hours later, Bailey dumped her stuff in a pile on the table in her room. For about an hour, Aunty Charlotte had helped her start the project, and Caleb tried it too. He enjoyed it, and started a small project of his own.
Then, Caleb and her played chess, he won easily, and then he had to get back to work. She had then headed to the Savory Den, grabbed some food, and headed back to her room.
It's been a good day so far, Bailey thought, curling up in her reading chair with the cross stitch.
Sorry that this chapter took a while. It was fun to write though! @Pole there is more Caleb in this chapter and another new character! When I started this, I didn't expect all the new characters, but they're cool. Anyway, any feedback would be great and I hope you like it!
