He stretch out as far as his arm would reach trying to hook the cumbersome rope, string, what had Heyward called it? Anyway, trying to hook this rope to a branch. From where he stood hooking the line on the next limb was a tricky thing. He just about had it when Emma’s angry voice broke his concentration and he almost plummeted to the ground below.
“Jo Shanks! What do you think you’re doing? Get down from there!”
He smiled down at her as he right himself. “I have to finish setting this up.”
“You mean finish with this mess?” She glared at all the globe-covered lines hanging from the trees. “What are those anyway?”
“Lights, at least that’s what Heyward and Emerson told me.” Jo smiled and explained, “See we wrap the trees in these globe rope things and then plug the end of the rope thing into that box there,” he pointed to a box on the ground, “then the globes will come on and burn like…”
“Candles,” Emma offered.
“Not really, but they’ll light up and it’ll be beautiful!” Jo held his arms wide and then gripped the tree trunk as he almost fell.
Emma gave him a wary look. “Hmm. You’re up to something?”
“What do you mean? I’m hanging…Christmas lights.” Jo waved it off as he hooked the rope over a branch and started climbing down.
“You’d never do something like this for no reason.”
“Well, if you must know Heyna and Nate need a little…hmm, help.”
“Help?” Emma raised an eyebrow.
“Well, every time they get together, they just stare at each other. Walk and stare. Sit and stare. Stand and stare. You get the point. So, these lights will give them something to talk about and they can finally get to know each other get married and…”
“WOW! Slow down, Jo. They just met like a month ago.”
“Yeah, but it’s obvious they like each other and they are a perfect couple.”
“Since when did you become a matchmaker?” Emma gave him a wary eye.
“Since I married you,” Jo winked at her and hurried off to finish the lights.
Jo hurried through hanging the last few yards of lights as darkness began to fall around him. With the evening shadows, the temperature dropped and his breath twirled away in ghostly swirls. He blew on his hands as he looked over his work. Some of it was a tad bit sloppy but he had tried his best. Besides no one would be looking at the cords. No, their eyes would be on the glowing globes and each other’s faces.
He took his position by the box that would supposedly make the globes burn. All he had to do was plug the cord in and Newcity would light up with brilliant colors just as Nate and Heyna began their evening stroll.
He smiled. His plan couldn’t have been better.
And there they were, arm in arm, coming in his direction. He clapped his mittened hands and grabbed the cord. He chuckled as he stuck it into the box and the lights flickered on, glowing red and green like a million little beautifully unique fires.
Sadly, it only lasted for a moment before something crackled and zipped up his arm. The lights when out and so did Jo.
When next he came to Emma was standing over him scowling as he lay in his bed. He smiled at her and rubbed his aching head.
“I guess it didn’t work?”
“What did you expect an unfinished project to do? Huh?” Emma placed her hand on his head and frowned. “Heyward said it could have been much worse. As it is you blew up most his bulbs and almost yourself.”
Jo grinned. “But wasn’t it pretty? Did Nate and Heyna like it?”
Emma shook her head. “Really Jo, I can’t believe you. They were too worried about you to worry about anything else. You shot through the air! You could have been fried!” Jo ducked his head. “But it was beautiful while it lasted.”
Emma sighed. “Yes, it was.”
Jo nodded and leaned back against the pillows. “Guess I’ll have to help Nate and Heyna another way.”
Emma slapped her forehead. “Oh, dear.”
