Just recently I have made a shocking realization, and I have a more clear idea of what the fourth book may be centered around. I am aware this is for Green Ember fans, but this is just a quick warning that there are LOTS of spoilers for Ember Falls and Ember Rising, so proceed with relative caution.
Me and my friend Revonna have made several theories about the books together, and one is about the Dragons. The first mention of them specifically is in Ember Rising, when Picket is talking to Master Smith Hame about the creation and fate of Flint’s Stone Sword. Page 153: “Others say Lander hid it with the dragon seeds, though none know where.” and later, “The smiths believe it was recovered by Lander and stored in the dragon tomb…” These “dragons” are almost never mentioned by name again, yet are familiar to the rabbits, hence Picket inquiring further about the sword, and not the Dragons. It is also belief that the Dragon Tombs are what Heather had fallen into on Forbidden Island, just outside of the First Warren. Ember Falls, Page 328: “Maybe we should bury her with that blundering little prince,” Morbin said. “Perhaps they belong in that tomb together.”
And then, we also see Heather has the power of prophetic dreams, being able to see what will happen in the future. For example, and what I consider to be one of the biggest lore reveals on the book’s part, Ember Falls, pages 241-242: She fell, crashing through the surface of the ground and landing in a dank underground hollow thick with fog. Large eggs covered the ground all around her, and a slick whispering voice sounded in her ears. “They will awaken” it said…. Then she saw him. Smalls lay motionless beside her. The dream ended as her necklace caught fire and a scaly hand found her in the fog.
This dream made everything fall into place. She had fallen in the tombs, with Smalls next to her. That means the way it ended, she saw them. The dragon seeds. Eggs.
The Master Smith had also mentioned that with his sword Flint “defeated the first foe”. It doesn’t say “kill”, but specifically “defeat”. They’re still alive, the first foes were the Dragons. And Lander threw their eggs into the tombs with them, to forever sleep. But, they will not sleep for long. They will awaken, with the coming of Heather and Smalls. Perhaps they are there to feed the hungry appetites of the once-slumbering beasts. But, no matter what happens, I think that it is most likely that the next book will be pivoting around the awakening and rising of the fearsome dragons once again, and it is up to Picket and Heather to try to suppress them and either destroy them once and for all, or seal them back underground in their tomb.
Morbin must have known about these enemies. He opened the tombs with the key that the Master Smith mentioned, and that was what broke the seal. Now they are free to roam, and what Morbin hopes will be the end of rabbit kind.
My sister had a theory like that!!
