So there's an idea that occurred to me once or twice during my time as a fan of the Green Ember series. We've seen a number of cases where multiple characters from one family have a role to play, whether in the present events of a particular book or in the overall history of Natalia. However, this isn't always a good thing, as if you feature enough members of a family as prominent characters there's always the chance that one or more of them will turn out to be antagonists, if only temporarily. We see this with the Longtreader family-lookin' at you Garten-and with the royal family-Bleston, Kylen, Naylen, Winslow, and at one point most of Jupiter's other children.
With the release of Dragon War, we learned that this holds true of the Grimble family as well. Apparently Grimble Sr. and Grimble Jr. were the bad sheep of a family that once was regarded with respect, with Hollie seemingly taking after her more distant progenitors than her father or grandfather. In contrast, Perkinson's father and grandfather were apparently trusted servants of Kings Jupiter and Walter, whereas Perk betrayed the rightful heir to the throne to support Bleston. But here's my question: in all the more than a hundred years that the family has been called by the name, has there ever been a bad Blackstar?
The Blackstar family has been loyal to the kings of rabbitkind for well over a century, with Fleck Blackstar's father Jon remaining behind on Golden Coat with King Gerrard. Fleck of course loyally served King Whitson and Prince Lander, and his sons Jon and Dane fought in the final battle of the Dragon War. Fleck's successor as Lord Blackstar, Lord Blackstar II, has an uncertain relationship to Fleck but is known to have married Lander's sister Lucianne. And of course, Lord Victor and his children Coleden and Heyna are faithful servants to Smalls and Emma during their respective tenures as heirs to the throne and later when Smalls becomes king.
However, it seems entirely possible to me that at some point in that lengthy history, there could have been at least one Blackstar who may not have been so loyal. Indeed, given that there was apparently a state of years in which many rabbit settlements were cut off from First Warren before Walter and Jupiter reestablished ties, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a rogue Blackstar or two in that time or even the years afterward. Of course, we have no evidence at this point that such is the case, but it seems like a possibility. What do y'all think-could there have been a bad Blackstar at some point, or am I just nuts?
Yes!!! I love the Blackstars and all, but still...
I definitely think a bad Blackstar is possible, they seem too perfect. I think maybe the family would have straightened out the rabbit, kept it quiet, or disinherited them. One of them at had to be overwhelmed by the family legacy, and just break under the pressure. I haven’t read the archers cup series so I don’t know if Cole or Heyna mention anything about their family. But it is interesting to think about.
I think you make a good point, it would make sense. Maybe something will come up in a future book?
