Wide World Ch.1 Wolves

What if Wilfred and Smalls made it to the Longtreaders before the Wolves did. Also sorry its so bad. I'm not very good with stories.

Heather Longtreader skipped through the long grass. It was warm august weather and the sun shone bright in the clear blue sky. Clouds drifted in the soft breeze that rustled the leaves in the big gnarled maple tree.

“Heather, do you want to play starseek? Picket Heather’s younger brother held a creation that had given them countless hours of tireless fun. It was not much, just five sticks wrapped in a long scarlet ribbon that soared in the air like a bird that was landing and they would see who could get it first.

Heather was fast and good at running. Picket was good at calculating and he had a knack for finding the right path. “Sure,”she said, smiling at her younger brother.

Heather wanted to enjoy these days because she was nearing maturity and Picket was right behind her. Picket threw the star and it disappeared in the long golden grass and she was off like a bolt of lightning, Picket right behind her. She kept running in the direction she thought the star was and she tripped on a stone hidden in the grass she rolled over and over and she panicked. Great Pickets probably found it by now. She popped her head up and sure enough Picket was holding the star in his hand a triumphant look splayed across his face. Heather and Picket played again and he won again.

Heather began to worry that her little brother was beating her at her own game. She could not let this upstart beat her, not yet, not ever. She threw the star high and as soon as it touched she ran as fast as she could. She wasn’t watching where she was going and tripped on another hidden stone. She rolled multiple times and pain shot through her foot. It's probably fine. She was sure Picket had it like the first round she popped her head up and saw grass parting where Picket was bounding. He didn’t have it, not yet. Heather saw Picket pop his head up and then out of the corner of Heather’s eye she saw it. She looked at Picket who was closer but he didn’t see it. He looked at her and Heather knew this was what she needed and she wasted no time. She bolted and she knew that Picket saw the star too but she had a head start now. She felt his presence and she ran faster. They both put their hands on the star. They crashed into each other and Heather held on tight. She popped up first and she looked at her hand and there was the star. She had Won!

“That,”Picket said, was awesome! Heather laughed.”It was.

Heather looked into the distance and there was a brewing storm coming. The breeze was stronger and it had cooled down but the storm wasn’t there yet and Heather wanted to know who would win the tournament.

”Let it fly,”Picket said. Heather threw the star but it didn’t land. It soared into the big Maples cruel branches.

”This is stupid,”Picket said, kicking a tuft of grass.”Lets see if we can get it,”Heather said, running to the creepiest place she knew. She looked up at the trunk of the big tree and sighed. “I’ll boost you up,”she said. “You know I’m scared of heights there's no point in teasing me,”Picket said. Heather rolled her eyes.”I’m sorry I’m not as brave as Heather the magnificent,”he said. Heather rolled her eyes and bit her tongue.”Come on we can get it before the storm is here. She held her hands in a way that Picket could use them as a stair. Picket walked over to the tree and put a foot on Heather's hands.

Heather didn’t really know what happened in the next five seconds except lightning hit the tree and she fell backward. “Picket…Picket you alright? She got up and saw her brother laying on the ground not moving. The worst thoughts went through her head. “Picket. Crack, Heather looked up and there was a big branch falling fast straight towards Picket. It will crush him! Heather dove for Picket and rolled them down the hill.

Then the rain came. It was cold and thick and it soaked them instantly. Heather hugged Picket close and his eyes opened.”It's alright Picket I got you,”she said. She got up and pulled Picket to his feet and started running to the house. Lightning struck and thunder pounded in their ears. Heather ran faster and their father met them half way back to their home in the big elm tree.

When they made it inside Heather’s mother ran over with a towel for all of them. “Your soaked all of you and you must be freezing. She led them all over to the fire and grabbed Jacks from the crib. “You guys go get changed into some dry clothes. Heather went upstairs and took off her soaked dress and slipped into the dress folded in her dresser. She felt warm and safe inside the big elm and she felt content. She went down stairs to see father going to the door. “Father, what are you doing? He opened it and there were two rabbits standing on the porch. “Wilfred is that you,”Father asked.”The one and only. “Well come in out of the rain. Two strange rabbits walked in. One of them was white like her and the other looked almost identical to father.”Wilfred? What are you doing here? I thought you were at First Warren. Mother walked over to Wilfred and hugged him. Picket who had been changing came down stairs to two strangers in the house. Wilfred thankfully took the dry towel Mother gave him and the white rabbit did the same.”Well this is Smalls,”Wilfred said. He said it mainly to Heather and Picket and Smalls smiled at them. “Well Wilfred I suppose I must ask, what are you doing here and at this hour? Father sounded confused and concerned. Wilfred looked at Father and Heather thought she saw a hint of urgency. “Me and Smalls left First Warren a week ago. It got so bad there we had to leave.”Good thing we did or we would be stuck there,”Smalls said. Wilfred nodded and went on.”We heard there was trouble up here so we came as quickly as we could.”Trouble what trouble? Father and Mother said it at the same time. “Well when we were on our way here we saw wolf tracks. Father and Mother started asking questions at once and Jacks was shouting for no good reason. Wolves, can’t be here? Heather felt sick. She had never seen a wolf but she knew that they were dangerous and could and would kill a rabbit just for the fun of it. Wilfred looked smothered.”Quiet! Wilfred looked at Father. “We beat them to you but they will be here in the morning and we have to go now! Heather felt so sick she was sure she would throw up but Picket steadied her.”How many do you think there are? Father looked rather pale and fear was in Mothers eyes. “Can’t say all we know is enough to take out all of Nick Hollow in a day. Father nodded determination on his face.”We will get ready to leave in the morning.

There was no sleep that night and everyone was tired because they went to bed at two A.M packing everything they needed for the journey to an unknown place.

Heather lay awake in bed Picket was tossing and turning in a fretful sleep. Heather couldn't take it anymore; she had to get out. She tiptoed out of her and Picket’s room and crept down the stairs. Wilfred was snoring softly and Smalls was motionless. Heather would have thought he was dead if it weren't for his breathing. She walked over to the door and opened it. Then she remembered the Wolves could be outside. She went upstairs and opened the window. There was a soft breeze and she thought of everyone in Nick Hollow.

Father had gone to all the houses in Nick Hollow to warn them about the wolves but no one believed that wolves would come this far out. For once Heather realized that there was so much more in the world then just Nick Hollow and she realized that some things in the world were not friendly and they would kill a rabbit in a second. Heather cried.
