Wide World Ch.2 Run to Safety
Sorry its so bad I am trying to get better at writing. Hope you like it and please tell me if I should improve something. =)
Heather woke to her mother shaking her. She sat up in bed and stretched. Then she remembered what she had learned the night before.”Are the wolves here! Heather accidentally yelled it which woke Picket who shot up and hit his head on the shelf above where he kept his books. “Ow,”He groaned. Mother smiled a brief smile.”No dear the wolves are not here yet but we are leaving soon. Heather nodded. Mother was about to leave but Heather grabbed her arm.”Mother, how do you know Wilfred and who is he? Mother looked at Heather sadly. “Wilfred is your Uncle. Heather nodded. I wonder why Mother was sad. She shrugged and got dressed quickly behind the curtain that could separate Picket and Heather. When they were both dressed she walked down stairs.
Father was sitting at the table with Wilfred and Smalls; they all had steaming cups of tea. Mother was holding baby Jacks and making breakfast at the same time. “I can hold Jack's Mother,”Heather said. Mother smiled and gave Jacks to Heather.”Thank you Heather,”She said.
“We should leave very soon. Wilfred looked anxiously at Smalls who looked around the room. Heather felt his gaze on her and she rocked Jacks in her arms. Mother put breakfast in a basket and covered it in a clean cloth. “We can eat breakfast later.
Everyone grabbed a small bag full of food and an extra pair of clothes. Father grabbed his pocket knife and put it in his pocket. Heather was the last to step out of the house. She closed the door and let go of the door knob for the last time. What will happen to us? Where will we go?
Heather followed behind and Picker walked beside her in silence. Mother was carrying baby Jacks and Father was in the lead with Uncle Wilfred.
“Picket what do you think we will do? Picket looked at the ground. “I don’t know,”he whispered.
The six rabbits walked on and on and Heather didn’t know where they were going until Father told them that they were heading to a place called cloud mountain.
“My brother Wilfred knows a rabbit named Decker. We will stay at his place for the night then carry on up the mountain in the morning,"He said.”When will we be there,”Heather asked?”Around noon,”Father said. Father and Mother had been taking turns holding Jacks and Heather saw that Mother was struggling with holding him.”I can hold Jacks,”Heather said. Mother looked at Heather gratefully.”Alright but if your arms get tired tell me and I will take him again. Heather nodded.
The sun was rising and so was the heat. Everyone was hot and miserable. Smalls slowed to let Heather and Picket ketch up to him. They walked in silence. “Where you from,”Picket said?”Not really anywhere,”Smalls said.”I move around a lot and never stay in one place long enough to make friends.”Are you Uncle Wilfred's son,”Heather asked?”No I am not…I’m his adopted son. Heather nodded.
About an hour later Heather began to wonder what time it was when she heard a gasp. Heather looked up to see a big plume of smoke. It filled the sky and looked like a storm cloud. Heather looked at Picket who had his eyes intent on the flames. Heather looked down at Jacks who was staring at the smoke in wonder. Wilfred ran ahead and hid in a clump of long grass.
Heather spotted seven wolves. She was surprised at how big they were and they looked strong and monstrous."There's seven,”she whispered to Smalls. He nodded and went over to Uncle Wilfred. Mother crept over and grabbed Jacks. Wilfred walked over to Father and started whispering something in his ear and Heather heard one thing, It.
Father looked at Heather and Picket then at Mother with Jacks in her arms. He walked over to Heather and Picket.”We are going to run for it in pairs. “Why not all together,”Heather asked?”Because then if one group is seen the others will have a chance to get across. Heather did not like to think about anyone getting caught.
Heather stood beside Picket ready to bolt. Father had said they were going first so they had the least chance of being caught because the wolves might be less suspicious. Heather watched for Uncle Wilfred's signal. Wilfred put three fingers up. One dropped. Heather felt her heart start to beat faster. Another dropped. Heather got ready to put all her energy into her feet. She had to be fast and Picket had to be fast as well if either of them wanted to make it without being seen. Uncle Wilfred's last finger dropped and Heather ran with all the speed she could manage.
Heather looked back at Picket who was running full speed. He was looking at the wolves and Heather’s heart skipped a beat when he tripped on a rock and rolled on the ground. Heather had made it to cover and was about to run and help her brother when she saw a white streak. Smalls lifted Picket and carried him to the cover of the trees. Uncle Wilfred was right behind him. Heather hugged her brother.
It was Mother and Fathers turn. Father was holding Jacks in his arms and he looked determined. Wilfred held up three fingers and when the last finger fell Father and Mother ran.
Heather’s heart fell when she saw a wolf turn and see the two rabbits running to the trees. The wolf howled and all at once Father and Mother and baby Jacks were surrounded by seven massive cruel wolves. Heather felt the tears pouring down her face and she tried to run. She wanted to fight the wolves. To try to save her Mother and Father even if she would end up getting caught herself she could at least try but Uncle Wilfred held her back. She turned and sobbed quietly. She had escaped but Father and Mother and little baby Jacks had been caught.
Well that didn't work out for them.🫤 I do have a question though, what about Lady Glen?
