Those are good thoughts. English medieval weapons would also include maces and battle axes, among other things. Some though, like lances, wouldn't apply, since the rabbits don't ride horses.

Another thought is that the sword was and is not only a weapon but a symbol. Due largely to its importance in (and inseparability from) knighthood and its widespread use in legends and stories, it represents bravery, chivalry, and medieval-ness more than any other item. So having swords be used really connects with the "old soul" idea, I think. I imagine this use of a symbol would be particularly effective for a young audience, who may not know about other weapons that much. Though a kid might not know what a halberd is, he/she would almost definitely understand a sword.

I personally think the use of other weapons would be cool, but also isn't necessary to the story.

(How odd... I thought I replied to this earlier.) I would really like to see that too, but I'm afraid it won't happen. All references to other friendly species were edited out from book 1 some time after the first edition. They were remnants from earlier versions of the story wherein other animals played a role (and Lord Rake was a dog!). I'm not sure why specifically, but Sam has chosen to focus on the rabbits and their enemies. If you do want to read about squirrels, I would suggest the Mistmantle Chronicles!

Redwall has a lot of squirrels too (but mostly mice).
