I know it is hard to read it, I have had the same problem with many books along with this one. What to do is just put the book down for a bit (maybe read a book you have read before...) then come back and finish it.
Keep going. The first book is kinda slow, but the second picks up pace almost right away—and it’s a LOT more intense!! Smalls becomes a major focal point, and he’s a VERY interesting character. Also, Picket gets way more mature, less whiny, and has much better humor. It only gets better from here on out, I promise!
I will hand this to you: The first book of Green Ember is a little bit duller than the rest. I find it often takes an author one or two books to get into their stride. The later books are much better!

Just curious, what point did you read to?
Just keep reading, or don't

Book one definitely WAS NOT the best. Book two is better. Book THREE IS SO AWESOME.

I'd say just keep reading. If you end up not liking it, that's okay, but the action does pick up and stays fairly constant in the later books.
