A few days later.
Kyter groaned as he shifted and tried to find a comfortable position. He heard a gasp and peered out through squinted eyes. A doe he had never before seen sat by his bed. He gasped and sat up, then cried out as pain shot down his leg and spread everywhere. His head throbbed and ached, and it felt like his brain was a heart instead of a brain as it pulsed in his head. He began to feel dizzy, and he was confused. Who was she?
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you or scare you,” the doe said as she came and fluffed his pillows before helping him lay back. “You just go back to sleep, and it will all be fine.”
“Who are you?”
“Oh, I’m sorry I forgot you didn’t know me, and I don’t really know you, at least not personally. I mean, I know of you, and I have sat here with you, but I don’t really know you. Sorry, I’m talking too much, um… I’m Luciana,” the doe said as she sighed and shook her head.
Kyter smiled; she was nice. He looked her up and down. Her fur was a downy grey, and her eyes a sparkling blue. She was around his age and looked unlike any of the does he remembered from school. “Where did you come from? Are you an angel?” He asked, his eyes widening at the thought. Was he dead? He looked around the room. Rounded chamber, his dresser, bed, and nightstand. He appeared to be in his room back in his family’s burrow.
“No, I’m not an angel.” Luciana shook her head, then said, “I’m from First Warren. I came with my parents to visit your parents; our parents are old friends. That was a lot of parents.” Luciana looked thoughtful for a minute; then she turned her blue eyes on him. “You should be resting, or if you’re not going to rest, I should let your parents know you’re awake; they have been so worried about you. Everyone has, really. You must be something special for everyone to love you so much. Sometimes I feel like everyone only acts like they love me because they know they should love me. Everyone likes my brother better, he’s older, responsible, a hero, and I’m just little ole me who will probably live a life of boredom, and no one will remember me, but they’ll remember my brother. He’ll do great things, they all say he will, but I’ll fade quietly into the background, remembered by no one because I’m a doe and I’m not important. Oh, I’m sorry, am I talking too much or burdening you with my problems? I’m so selfish.” Luciana stood and looked around the room as if she didn’t quite know what to do.
“No, you’re fine,” Kyter said as he settled his head into his pillow, he liked her. “Could you give me a drink of water, please, and then I’ll rest some more. I want to be ready to talk when I see my parents.” His own voice sounded weak to his ears, and he knew it would be a while before he was his old self. He looked down at his thickly bandaged leg, his hand which still felt off, and the many other wraps on his body he was lucky to be alive.
“Water, yes. I can do that.” Luciana looked around the room for a minute before finally spotting the pitcher and cup. She grabbed them and held them up for Kyter to see. She poured the water and held it to his mouth as she said, “You should have seen how tight your dad held you. He wouldn’t let go. He insisted on carrying you home even after his own legs gave out from exhaustion. So, my father and Captain Gavin carried him the rest of the way.” Kyter leaned away from the cup and laid back down, listening to Luciana’s calm, clear voice.
“You looked bad, not being mean, just honest. Anyway, your mother is looking after your father right now; we just did a shift change. Your mother, my mother, Jaylee, and I, we all take turns watching the two of you. I like helping it's lots of fun. We take turns because someone has to watch Jonston and someone has to cook, and of course, we would all rather be watching the two of you.”
Kyter smiled, and his head lolled to the side as he tried to stay awake.
Luciana put the pitcher down. “Oh, I wore you out, and I keep talking, which means you can’t sleep. Um… I’ll sing you a song to help you sleep, and then I won’t be bothering you. So, what to sing? What to sing?”
Luciana sat down, then said, “Oh, a perfect one. My brother wrote it, so it doesn’t quite go, but it will work well enough.” Luciana cleared her throat then began to sing:
“On boats we sailed across the sea
And settled in a land
Upon the shores of a great lake
A home we thought we had
“But across the lake
In mountains lay a foe like none before
A thing with wings like a midnight sky
Talons sharp as steel
And a sound that echoes still
“This mighty foe attacked our fleet
And we were torn to shreds.
But through the chaos, one voice sounded
A hero that day was born.
A simple buck, from simple life
A hero all the more
“He saved us all with a daring scheme.
So his name shall go down in history.
In this ballad
Of Blackstars and Birds…”
Kyter drifted off to the hum of her voice, singing a song of praise for his father. She had begun the second line to the song, but all he could hear was a dull hum as his mind drifted away. But as he fell asleep, he remembered thinking one random thought. I really like Luciana.
