Jaidie
Peter’s heart stopped beating as he stared into Daggler’s wicked eyes. So many memories of Rexly’s father came flooding back but one memory stood out and that was the one when Rexly’s father had died. All Peter could see at this moment was Daggler standing over Rexly’s father’s prone and bloodied form. He couldn’t control the strong emotions that were building up in him. He couldn’t imagine what Rexly was going through right now.
Peter felt Daggler’s sword press harder under his chin and he felt a small stinging as Daggler’s blade just barely cut through his skin. After the stinging, he felt something warm trickle down his chin and onto his neck. Daggler smiled, obviously pleased with himself but then his face turned to stone as he spoke again. An unpleasant shiver went up Peter’s spine.
“I asked you a question thief, and I don’t like it when people don’t answer. So, answer the question.”
Peter’s heartbeat quickened, he shook his head. Daggler smiled.
“That’s what I thought,” Daggler said as he grabbed Peter’s left wrist. Peter screamed partly from the instinct of being held by a monster such as Daggler but also because he felt more than one bone shift under Daggler’s iron grip.
Daggler looked at him, then down at the straps around Peter’s wrist. Daggler grinned and then slowly moved his hand putting his fingers under Peter’s frail bones. They shifted and clacked together settling into the wrong places which caused spasms of pain to shoot up his arm. Peter squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his teeth against the pain.
Daggler moved his hand again, Peter’s stomach flipped and he cried out, “Ah.”
He opened his eyes as tears streaked down his face. Daggler was smiling like a little buck who had just gotten away with pulling his sister’s ears. Daggler adjusted his grip and Peter looked away clenching his teeth, waiting for the pain but it didn’t come.
He heard the swoosh of an arrow and the gentle thump as it landed. “Leave him ALONE!”
Peter looked up to see Rexly lower his bow. Tears streaked his face and his eyes were full of hate. Peter saw the arrow Rexly had shot sticking harmlessly in the ground by Daggler’s feet. Daggler looked at the arrow and smiled shaking his head.
“That was the dumbest thing you could have done, guards,” Daggler nodded his head toward Rexly. Two of the guards nodded and made their way towards Rexly. Rexly glared at Daggler.
“You may not remember me but I remember you and I also remember what you did. You killed my father!” Rexly yelled.
Daggler seemed unfazed. Rexly opened his mouth, Peter shook his head and mouthed, “Rexly don’t.”
But Rexly didn’t listen. “You killed my father! YOU KILLED HIM! You killed him in cold blood and you don’t even care! You stand there torturing someone half your size and don’t even care! Well, that’s because you’re a coward. A COWARD! You murdered my father and now you stand here hurting MY brother like the coward you are and I hate you! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU!” Rexly yelled as he fired another arrow at Daggler.
Daggler simply moved, dragging Peter with him. Peter grimaced at the pain in his wrist. Daggler went to one of the guards and shoved Peter into his arms. “Take the thief to the dungeons, I have a traitor to deal with.”
Daggler turned and started walking toward Rexly. Peter struggled against the guard. “NO Rexly! Run, RUN!”
Rexly looked at him with tears in his eyes, he shook his head. Peter struggled again. “Just go Rexly, save yourself! Go, GO!” Rexly stared at him. “I’ll come back, I’ll come back, I promise. Just hang in there Peter, I’ll come back! I’LL COME BACK!” Rexly yelled as he darted off. He stopped on a hill a few feet away and Peter saw him mouth, “I’ll come back for my brother, I promise, I promise.” Then he disappeared into the forest.
Peter hung his head, tears running down his face. Daggler yelled, cursing the retreating Rexly. Then he looked back at the guards, some of the guards made to go after Rexly but Daggler stopped them. “Let the coward go,” he sneered. Daggler looked down at Peter and put his hand under Peter’s chin lifting his head. Daggler smiled. “We have all we need right here.”
Peter trembled in fear and closed his eyes. Daggler laughed an evil wicked laugh that echoed through the square. Peter opened his eyes as he was forced into a cart. Daggler grinned and looked in the direction that Rexly had run. “Looks like your friend abandoned you and he called me a coward.” Daggler snorted.
“That’s because you are a coward,” Peter said, his voice strained.
Daggler scowled at him then raised his hand and struck him. Peter cried out and fell putting a hand to his lip. Daggler sneered. “Who’s the coward now.” Then he slammed the barred door shut. The cart jostled as the two massive wolves that were harnessed to it began to walk.
Peter curled up into a ball like he had done so many times before, only this time it was different because this time he really was afraid.
Oh, Peter. That must hurt so badly. You did such an excellent job of making me feel the emotions in this chapter, Jaidie. It was incredibly moving.
I love the name Peter, btw. It reminds me of spider-man! 🕷🕷
aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i am in tears why why why???? That really made my left wrist hurt... ouch poor Peter. Oh Rexly. i love him but this makes me so sad!
[also in the prologue when the guard said he would not be beaten by ca 9 year old boy... i know that feeling.., i have a 9 year old cousin and he STOLE MY SHOE. right off my foot... lol.]
Oh Peter!!!!!! So well written. And so sad. Wow, this was a plot twist to me. At least Rexly is escaping!!! He did his very best and... oh dear I HOPE he'll be able to come back for poor Peter! Rexly really said some wonderful scathing things to Daggler, but it makes me mad that Daggler's barely affected. At least not YET. :) Fantastic chapter!!!
(I know! The trivia's been stuck in my head all morning, driving me crazy cause I still haven't figured it out. lol)
