Courage collapsed on his bunk. His head swirled with questions. Who was lying? The cause, or the administration? Why?
“Courage?” Pierce asked. His footsteps echoed on the wooden floors.
“Go away.” Courage sobbed.
“No.” Pierce said. He sat on the bunk opposite Courage.
“Why? Who cares about me?” Courage sobbed.
“Listen.” Pierce said. Courage looked into the older buck’s eyes.
“What?” Courage asked.
“We’ve been planning an escape.” Pierce said, right foot twitching.
“Escape?” Courage asked, head popping up.
“Meet us at the tool shed at midnight.” Pierce said, standing and leaving.
Courage flopped onto his bunk to get a little rest before midnight.
…..ten minutes til midnight…..
Courage stuffed his satchel and pockets full of potatoes. He slipped into the night.
Frozen wind bit his ears and mouth. Rain soaked his fur. Courage struggled to see through the storm.
He soon came to a small shed. Opening the door, he saw Pierce sitting with his back to a small door.
Pierce motioned Courage through the door and down the steps
Five minutes later.
Footsteps. Then a hard pressed fight sounds. Then a cry. Silence, and the door was opening. Buck, Dan, and Courage hid behind potato sacks as they heard footsteps down the stairs.
