I finally finished it! I was inspired to write this as I helped my Grandpa put up Christmas lights. Though our job was much much easier. Hope you enjoy!
Christmas Lights
Picket tramped through the snow toward the royal palace.
“What has Heyward come up with this time?” he said to himself. “I hope it's nothing too crazy.”
As he came near the palace he saw Smalls, Jo, Kylen, and Cole.
“Hey there Packslayer! How’s the arm?” called Jo, waving at him.
“Hardy har, Mister Insult-the-guy-who-saved-your-life,” Picket replied.
“Alright, captains, enough with the banter,” Smalls said, “we got a job to do, and Heather and Emma will kill me if we’re not done by dinner.”
“Did you say kill you?” Picket asked, “I think that would count as treason. Do I need to get the army back together to take down these imposters?”
“Alright, so here’s the plan,” said Smalls, ignoring this remark, “Heyward has been working all summer on a new project based on those blastpowder arrows. He strung a long string through a thicker, hollowed out rope; and attached little lights with a flint and steel lighter. When you pull the string it lights all the flints, which have a glass jar around them.
“Our job is to string these all around the royal palace. Is that understood?”
“Sure!” Kylen replied for them all.
“Perfect! Alright, Jo, Picket, and I will climb around in the tree and string them there; Cole and Kyle will be lining the palace and walkways with them.
“Are you sure?” said Jo, looking over at Picket.
“Oh, definitely,” Smalls replied with a wink, “let’s get going!”
Kyle and Cole jogged off toward the stairs.
“Alright,” Smalls said, “Jo, grab that box of lights and let’s get climbing!”
Jo grabbed the box and they began climbing. Picket tried to keep up but he only had one arm and had to climb onto each branch before going to the next one. Suddenly, Jo lost his grip on the branch!
“WHOAOAOAOAHH!” cried Jo, landing in a heap in the snow
“Are the lights fine?” called Picket.
“Are the lights alright?” muttered Jo, “Yes they are,” he shouted, “and I’m alright as well!”
“That’s nice,” replied Smalls. , “Get back up here!”
Jo began climbing up again but just as he reached Picket, Picket lost his grip. He began falling and landed on Jo who in turn lost his grip. The both landed in a heap in the snow. Smalls opened his mouth–
“Before you ask, the lights are fine!” called Jo.
“Oh, I was going to ask Picket how he was doing,” Smalls answered.
Smalls had been hanging on the edge of the tree’s walkway and as he turned to see what had happened Kylen accidentally stepped on his paws. Smalls let out a woop as he joined the pile on the ground.
“I wonder if we should make some sort of safety net or something,” laughed Picket.
“Maybe,” mused Smalls.
A coil of the other groups rope landed on his head.
“Hey! This gives me an idea.” Smalls exclaimed.
Three hours later the two groups stood back as they lit the lights.
“Wow! They look beautiful!” Cole exclaimed. “Even though it’s still light out.”
Picket said, “I’m glad you came up with that idea of tying us together O great and wise King Smalden. Otherwise we’d never have finished!”
“Who says you’re finished?” said Heather, stepping out of the palace with Emma and Heyna. “We need you all to put up the lights at the Christmas feast!”
All five of the bucks groaned.
