They walked back into Savory Den and were surprised to find many of the rabbits in Victorian outfits. “When did everyone change?” Bailey asks, having not seen anyone in a Victorian outfit earlier.
“Must have happened while we were changing,” Heather suggested. Hyena and Mrs. Weaver shared a glance. Hyena, who had been helping with hot chocolate, also had been a lookout to let Mrs. Weaver know when everyone was changed.
“Did you make Victorian outfits for everyone?” Emma asked.
“Yes, with some help of course,” Mrs. Weaver replied.
“Why?” Bailey asked, turning from the crowd to Mrs. Weaver.
“Why what, child?” Mrs. Weaver replied, “Just why doesn’t give one enough information to form a complete answer.”
“Why did you make everyone a Victorian outfit?” Bailey revised. “It seems like a lot, especially if it was just because I wanted one.”
“Well, dear,” Mrs. Weaver started, sitting in one of the chairs. “When I was young, my family would all dress up in the Victorian style and go caroling around our neighborhood. Over the years, more and more of our neighbors joined in, until the entire village dressed up. When you mentioned it, I thought it would be fun to do that again.”
“That is really cool,” Caleb said.
“Speaking of traditions,” Jo said, “what about the gift trading tradition we were going to do?”
“Oh yeah!” Heather exclaimed, “We kind of walked off during the middle of it. Does everyone still have their paper?”
“Yes,” they responded, except for Hyena.
“Paper?” she asked.
“We all put our names on a piece of paper,” Caleb explained, taking off his hat, “which we will put in this hat. Then we all draw a name you have to get a gift for them, but you can’t let them know.”
“That sounds fun,” Hyena said, accepting a piece of paper from Heather. She quickly wrote her name on it and dumped it in the hat, which then got passed around for everyone else to put in.
“Ready?” Caleb asked, receiving his hat back. “Emma, you can pick first.” Emma reached in and quickly grabbed one.
“I can keep track of who everyone has if you would like,” Mrs. Weaver offered.
“That would actually make it a lot easier,” Caleb admitted. “Thank you. Also, then if someone is completely lost on what to get someone, Mrs. Weaver can help without revealing who you have.”
Emma walked over to Mrs. Weaver and quietly showed her the piece of paper. “Got it,” Mrs. Weaver said, writing down Jo next to Emma’s name. Jo tried to peek, but Picket pulled him back.
“It’s ungentlemanly to peek, Jo,” Mrs. Weaver said, moving chairs.
“Bailey?” Caleb said, holding out the hat. Bailey reached in and grabbed one. She then walked over to Mrs. Weaver and Mrs. Weaver wrote Cole next to her name.
As they went through, picking out of the hat, it was fun to watch faces. Some people were able to keep a straight face, but some just looked confused. Perk was the last to draw and pretended like there was more than one to choose from. When he finally picked up the piece of paper, he handed it to Mrs. Weaver. She wrote it down, now having a master list of everyone and who they were giving a gift to. Emma was getting a gift for Jo, Bailey got Cole, Hyena got Perk, Heather got Caleb, Cole got Picket, Caleb got Bailey, Picket got Emma, Jo got Hyena, and Perk got Heather.
“Okay,” Caleb said, putting his hat back on, “Everyone has to get their gift by Christmas morning at the latest, but have it ready by Christmas Eve preferably. Do not put your name on it, only the person you are giving the gift to. If Mrs. Weaver doesn’t mind, we will give her all the gifts to keep it secret.” Mrs. Weaver nodded.
“Okay, everyone ready?” Everyone was excited and on the edge of their seats. “Start shopping!”
Everyone jumped up and was about to head out, but Mrs. Weaver said, “Wait.” Everyone turned to face her. “You can get your gifts later, we are going to do some Victorian-era dancing.” She stood up. “Come along.” Some of the bucks glanced at each other, but everyone followed her.
Mrs. Weaver walked up to the small orchestra. “Ready?” she asked them.
“Yes,” the conductor replied and started playing some classical music to dance to.
Mrs. Weaver walked back to the group. “Now gentlemen,” she instructed, “you ask the ladies to dance. And for simplicity’s sake, you will dance with the lady you brought down for the first dance. After that, you can ask whoever.”
Jo walked over and bowed to Emma. “May I have this dance?” he asked, extending his hand.
“Yes, my good sir,” Emma responded, taking his hand.
The rest of the bucks asked the ladies to dance. Once they were ready, Mrs. Weaver instructed them on how to dance, and away they went.
I realize it's not Christmas anymore, but I never finished this, so... Besides, it's fun to write. If anyone is wondering, for who got who I made a random generator to make two lists of their names. That way I didn't have to figure out who was getting who. Anyway, I hope you like it!
Yay!!! I love the victorian outfits!!! Hmmm, do I detect some #Jemma? = ) Great chapter, looking forward to more!!
