Enjoy...
Marisa yawned loudly as she stomped into her small kitchen. She looked around as she poured herself a glass of water and smiled. She had been working as a nurse for a long while now and she had bought herself this place after a couple months. She didn’t mind the place, it was actually very comfortable. It just wasn’t her dream home. It was slightly small but that would be fine for now. She sipped her water. She would need a bigger house if she were to ever have kits, which she definitely wanted. She imagined for a moment. Her and Richard sitting in old rocking chairs, watching young does and bucks tackling each other, not a care in the world. They would lay the kits down then he would invite her to dance. Then they would stare at the fire before falling asleep. It sounded like heaven. But for now she needed to get to work. She headed out of the door, grabbing her bag and coat. She walked down the road, walking carefully so as to not slip on ice. She opened the door to the nurses office and sudden warmth met her face. She walked in with a smile, “Hello Carol, Dr. Grandten, Dr. Galleger, Jim!”
She headed over to the lanky buck in the corner. He smiled at her as she neared. Jim was a good friend of Richards and they could even be brothers. They were both albino the only difference in their features were their height and build. Richard had different eyes also. His seemed piercing, almost scary where Jim’s were soft and dewy. Richard had a thinner build while Jim was a bit on the pudgy side. “Wassup Jim? How are the kits?” she asked, smiling at the patients waiting in the corner. “Oh they good. Not been up to much. You?”
“Nothing really, me and Richard have gone out every other night but that's it.”
“I had be going to work now.” Jim said, walking away quickly. Marisa frowned. Jim had never seemed to like her, she didn’t know why. Carol, an older doe who enjoyed knitting during break, stalked over, handing Marisa her list of patients for the day. “Thanks Carol.” Marisa said and Carol glared at her. “Oh I’m so sorry!” Marisa said she had forgotten Carol was def. Then she realized she was still talking. “Thank you for the list.” she signed and Carol smiled a toothless smile, signing something back that Marisa couldn’t read. She nodded and looked down at her list. It consisted of eight patients, that was more than normal. She read the first name on the list, “Bacia Green?”
“Right here ma’am.” came a timid voice. A young doe stood, she couldn’t be much older then what Fritz’s sister had been. Fritz. Bile rose in her mouth and she fought the urge to spit. She hated him, but she wouldn’t let the bad memories ruin her day. “Come with me please.” She said, walking to the back room.
“Ma’am, I don't need no shots do I?” the doe asked, her speckled fur shining in the bright lights.
“I’m not sure. Parents name?” she asked, pushing the doe lightly onto the doctors bed.
“Last one done.” Marisa mumbled, yawing slightly as she led her last patient to the other room. “Dr. Galleger will take it from here. Have a good rest of your day!”
She closed the door behind her patient and sat heavily at the table in the break room. She put her head in her hands, closing her eyes for a moment. Richard would be here any moment and he would scoop her up, and tell her how beautiful she was, and carry her home with a grin on his face. She sighed then it all happened in a flash. The smell that made her gag and her eyes fill with tears. The smell, the density, the heat.
Fire
Fire
Fire
“Fire!” She screamed, her heart pounding in her chest.
No no no no no no no no no no
I can't die. I have too much life ahead of me
She rushed to the lobby and pushed on the door, ramming her shoulder into it. “No!” she screamed “No! Richard! RICHARD!!!” nothing. Then screaming. Carol was in the lobby. She was going to die. They were all going to die. She backed up then rammed into the door again. It collapsed and she burst through. Fire licked her ankles and she gasped in pain, trying to hold back her screams of agony. The whole place was burning down. Pillars had collapsed in front of the door blocking it. They were on fire along with the rest of the lobby. It surrounded everything, eating it as though it were a child who was starving. Marisa spun to the desk, her dress catching fire. “Carol!” she shouted. She ran behind the desk and screamed in agony. The doe she had grown so fond of lay on the ground, burning. Dead.
The pain was unbearable. Physically and emotionally. It felt like knives stabbing her thousands of times. She screamed and collapsed, fire swallowing her whole. Orange blurred her vision. She was going to die like this, alone. “Richard.” she coughed.
The world was starting to close in.
Black pulled at her vision.
Screaming. Thats all she could hear. She was going to give up. Let death take her.
She felt something collapse on her as she let the darkness win.
