Alan smiled at Grace; she was so pretty. She smiled back, which made her all the more beautiful. “You look so pretty when you smile,” Alan said.
Grace looked down, blushing. “Thank you.”
“So, Grace, what’s your favorite color?” Alan asked, looking at her.
Grace thought for a minute before saying, “I like the colors of the sunset.”
Alan nodded. “What part of the sunset do you like most?”
“Well, I know this is kind of weird, but I really like all of the bright oranges,” Grace said, looking down.
“It’s not weird. I like orange,” Alan said with a smile.
“Thank you. Most rabbits think it’s weird. They say orange reminds them of jail.”
Alan shook his head and said, “I don’t think it looks like a jail. I think orange is a very pretty color.”
Grace smiled. “So, what’s your favorite color?”
Alan thought about it for a moment and was about to say something when a familiar smell filled the air. Alan sniffed, trying to find what it was.
Grace looked at him. “Alan, what’s wrong?”
Alan looked at her, then said, “Alcohol.” He closed his eyes as the memories of his father came back. All the times his father had beaten him. How his father always carried around a small bottle that held this same smell that he smelled now.
“Alan, Alan, are you okay?”
Alan shook his head. “No, no, somethings wrong. He’s here,” Alan said, looking around, his eyes wide and frantic.
Grace looked at him, confused, “Who?”
Alan was about to answer when he heard something, a moan. He walked toward the sound, then he turned a corner and froze at what he saw. Blood-stained glass covered the ground. He dropped his crutches and fell to the ground when he saw a dark-furred rabbit laying there. Though the bucks face was covered in blood, Alan knew who it was. David.
He heard a scream and looked back to see Grace. He then looked back to David. “Can you help him?” Alan said, tears in his eyes.
Grace came over to David and checked his pulse. “He has a heartbeat. It’s weak, but he has one.”
Alan nodded. Glad that David was still alive. But what happened? Who would want to hurt or even kill David? Whoever it was Alan, was going to find them and make them pay himself. No one messed with his brothers, no one.
“Al…Alan.” A voice said weakly.
Alan looked back to David; his eyes were open. Alan grabbed David’s hand. “David, what happened? Who would do this to you?” Alan asked, more tears coming to his eyes.
David winced. “Y...your fath…father,” David said, taking a shaky breath.
Alan backed away. Pain shot up his leg, but he didn’t care. He bit his lip as he looked back to David and said, “Where…Where…Where…is he?”
But David was already starting to drift. David lifted his hand and gave him a small piece of paper. Alan took it then looked back to David. “It’s for you. It’s fr…from your fath…er,” David said, then he fell limp.
“David! DAVID! DAVID!” Alan yelled, tears in his eyes.
“It’s okay, Alan, he’s just fainted. Let him rest,” Grace said softly.
Alan nodded. “But what if he doesn’t…” Alan started to say, but he couldn’t speak it.
Grace shook her head, tears in her eyes as she said, “He might not wake up Alan, but we have to be strong.”
Alan looked away, more tears coming to his eyes. He couldn’t stand it. “Could you read this for me?” Alan said, handing the note to Grace.
She took it and started reading it out loud. “Hello…” She stopped, not sure if she wanted to say it.
But Alan nodded his head, “Go ahead, I already know what it says.”
Grace nodded back and went on. “Hello, freak. I’m just going to make this short. I have the little one you love so much, and if you don’t come back to me, I will kill him. Come alone. I know you have someone reading this for you, probably that pretty doe of yours so let me tell you something, if you don’t come alone, I might have to kill whoever is with you. So, come alone, freak. And don’t try anything, or someone might get hurt.”
Grace looked at Alan. He got up, wincing. “You’re not really going alone?” Grace asked.
Alan sighed. “I have too,” he said.
“I’m coming,” Grace said, standing.
Alan turned to her, “No, you’re not. Stay here. I’ll be fine. He won’t hurt me; he needs me to work. When I get Zeke, I’ll send him back to you and Grace, please, take good care of him,” Alan said, then he started to limp away.
Grace put her hands on her hips and yelled, “This is crazy, but what do I care! Fine, just go, get yourself killed! AT LEAST I GET A BROTHER! I’LL JUST GO TAKE DAVID TO THE HOSPITAL, OH AND WHILE I’M AT IT WOULD YOU PREFER OAK OR PINE FOR YOUR COFFIN!”
But then Alan was gone, and Grace went over to David and sighed. “I guess it’s up to me to save my knight in this story, huh.” Then she went to get help. She wasn’t going to let Alan do this alone. She would have to get some help.
Sorry, it's long! Hope you guys liked it!
