David sat with his head in his hands, thinking about Alan. This was all his fault. He had the idea to escape from First Warren, and because of that, so many had died. So many good bucks had died, and now Alan was dying. And it was all his fault; it was always his fault.
Because of him, good, young bucks had been killed. Because of him, Alan was hurt. Because of him, Roy was dead. Roy, his brother, his little brother, was dead all because of him.
Why, why did he always kill the ones he cared about? Roy was dead because David wouldn't listen. If he had only listened to them, Roy would still be here, but he hadn't listened to Daggler. Why hadn't he listened? Why had he been such a fool? And because of him, Roy was gone. If he had only listened...
Why, why, why couldn't he have listened. If he had listened, none of this would have happened. But he hadn't listened, and Roy had paid the price for David's actions. It wasn't fair! Why had Daggler taken Roy and not him; he was the one who had broken the rules, not Roy. So why had Roy been taken away and not him; it wasn't fair!?
"Are you okay, David?"
David looked up to see Kate. He nodded his head as he wiped tears from his eyes. Kate sat down beside him. "It's okay. Alan is going to be okay. Doctor Wim is a good doctor." She put a hand on David's shoulder.
He looked up at her and said, his voice shaking, "I'm worried about him. What if..." David trailed off, unable to say it. Unable to voice his fears.
"He will make it, I'm sure of it." Kate smiled weakly.
"I'm just worried. I just want him to be okay and happy. He's never had joy in his life, and I'm afraid that he might never have it.” David said as more tears came to his eyes and clouded his vision.
"It will be okay. He is a fighter. I can see it in his eyes. He won't let this stop him, I'm sure of it."
David smiled weakly; he liked Kate. She was pretty, and she always seemed to know the right thing to say.
David heard a door open and quickly stood up. Worry crashing over him as he saw Doctor Wim step out into the room. David trembled in fear, but then Doctor Wim smiled at him and said, "No need to worry anymore, young David, he is fine and alive. Young Kate was right; your friend is a fighter. No rabbit should have lived through that, but I guess no one told him that."
David's whole body filled with joy; Alan was alive. David's eyes filled with tears of pure joy, that over followed and mixed with the ones of worry on his cheeks. Alan was alive!
