There was no meeting that night. Many rabbits gathered despite the fact, but no one spoke. The Tunneler was no where to be seen.
Laurel looked around the room in a sleepy sort of way, her eyes red and itchy. She felt so tired and empty.
Dylan squeezed her hand tenderly, looking at her with sadness. They had parted ways at Morbin’s palace, but met up almost as soon as they returned. They didn’t wait till nightfall to go to the Seventh district, and sat in the hidden room's corner for the whole evening, huddled and alone, just trying to make sense of what just occurred.
Laurel rubbed her eyes and looked up, hoping to see Whittle. He was no where in sight. He must be at home with Sween.
Remembering the doe made tears prick her eyes and she bit her lip. What a terrible day.
A rabbit came over to where they sat and looked at Laurel, his eyes full of sadness. “Laurel, would you come with me please?”
Laurel looked up at him, trying to push through the fog. “Why?” She asked quietly, her voice low and rough.
The rabbit frowned. “Harmony.”
Laurel felt her heart sink even lower that what it had been. Poor Harmony! Where was she? Who told her the news? How did she find out? And how was she doing?
Laurel nodded and got to her feet, letting go of Dylan’s hand. “I’ll be back soon,” she said to him. Dylan nodded and watched her leave the full, quiet room.
Laurel followed the old rabbit down a hall with a lamp, but stopped about halfway to where the Tunneler's quarters were. He then pointed towards a dark hallway. Laurel gave him a bewildered look.
“She’s down there,” he finally explained, his voice pinched and wavering as he turned and headed back the way they came. Soon, Laurel heard complete silence.
Well, almost complete silence.
As she slowly approached the hall, she heard sniffling. At first, she wondered if it was someone who had exited the secret room and was trying to get their emotions in order. But as she drew near, Laurel realized who it was.
Huddled against the wall, Harmony had her back to the entrance. Her shoulders shook and she kept sniffing. She hadn’t heard Laurel approach.
Laurel bit her lip, waiting a moment, before coming close and touching the does shoulder tenderly. Harmony flinched.
“H-Harmony,” Laurel said quietly, he voice thick with tears.
The doe turned and looked up at her, her usually bright, feisty eyes now dim and full of tears. She wiped her eyes on her sleeve.
“Hey,” She greeted, shuffling over to make room for Laurel.
Laurel sat down beside her and looked at her, her green eyes dull and lifeless. “How are you doing?”
Harmony snorted, her chin quivering as she looked away for a moment. “I feel dead.” She answered finally, her voice quiet.
Laurel took Harmony’s hand in hers. “Who told you?” She asked, wondering if she was even fit to be here. Was Harmony still angry with her? Did Harmony blame her?
Harmony drew a ragged breath. “Whittle came… he told me and my father.”
Laurel froze. Wait. “… Your father?” she asked, uncertainty and confusion in her tone.
Harmony smirked a little, then frowned. “The Tunneler is my father, Laurel. He's lost all his children now, except me.”
Laurel studied the doe in the dark. She could only see her outline against a torch that burned further down the hall. Laurel realized she wasn’t joking.
“A-and now… he is stuck with me. The sorriest state of a daughter who can’t hold her tongue or do anything right-" Harmony couldn’t go on as she began to sob.
“And now look at me, crying like a baby. What is wrong with me?” She cried, drawing her knees up to her chest and burying her face in her arms.
Laurel put her arms around the does shoulders. “Harmony, nothing is wrong with you!” She exclaimed, her eyes burning with fresh tears yet again. “You are the bravest doe I know! You’ve been through so much, and you’re so strong, and know what you’re doing.”
Harmony raised her head and wiped her eyes, turning to look at Laurel. “I… I heard that you were there.” She said after a few minutes of silence.
Laurel felt her throat go dry as she nodded.
Harmony cleared her throat. “It… it must’ve been horrifying.”
Laurel turned to look back into the darkness. “Yes… it was.” She whispered, feeling a shiver crawl up her spine. “What’s worse, is Garten Longtreader is preparing to attack the Cause outside. He is getting ready to leave in the next couple days.”
Laurel flinched. “Sorry, it’s not worse.”
Harmony chuckled. “Well, I guess we will just have to see what happens. Maybe Melody’s death is going to start things rolling.”
Laurel felt a weight settle in her stomach at Harmony’s words. The doe leaned her head on Laurel’s shoulder and fell quiet, leaving Laurel to think over what was said.
Start things rolling.
For some reason, Laurel knew what Harmony said was true. But if it was good or bad, she didn’t know.
Laurel shifted the heavy basket on her arm as Helen continued to speak about some sort of gossip she had heard. But Laurel wasn’t paying attention. She was still trying to push through the fog and cloud that congested her mind.
She remembered that after she and Harmony left the hall last night, Dylan had offered to walk Harmony home which she accepted. Dylan then said goodnight to Laurel, giving her another hug before heading towards the tunnel with Harmony.
Then Laurel went home herself, thankful to find that her mom was already in bed. But this morning at breakfast, Fern had heard the news about a servants death in Morbin’s palace.
“Its terrible,” she had said softly as she stirred her tea. “Who knew what the servant had done to provoke Morbin… you have to be so careful. If you displease one rabbit or master, your life is very well on the line.”
Laurel shook away the conversation, trying to listen to Helen. She suddenly realized that they had stopped walking, and that Helen no longer spoke.
Laurel turned to face her. “Helen, what’s wrong?” She asked, her heart beginning to pound.
Helen stared past Laurel, her eyes wide with fear. Laurel turned to see what had frightened her friend. She paled, and her heart quaked.
Five Wrongtreader soldiers stood directly in front of them, blocking the road. She recognized one of them as Marvin.
Vitton's right hand bucks.
“Laurel Evergreen, you are under arrest.”

Uh oh. Everything is near boiling, I think. (Not just Dylan, who, as Apple A Day said, is getting "warm." XD) But hey! At least that means Laurel can't be kept in prison too long. If she survives getting there...
Oh dear! Stay safe dear Laurel! Also I see you Dylan, you sly dog. Getting warm eh? 😏
OHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOO!!! Is this because some saw Dylan hugging her??
Wait... WHAT!!! NO!!!! Oh goodness, I knew something would be coming... I still just love Dylan and I love Laurel and you really made me feel so bad for Harmony's plight and how she blames herself...so so sad. This really was amazingly written as always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
