WARNING: This post contains SPOILERS. Do not, I repeat, do NOT read this if you haven't read Ember's End yet. If you do want to know spoilers, which I do not recommend, I suppose you can read this, but I wouldn't if I were you. I think I can start now...
Well, it came to this. In honor of everyone's favorite Lord Captain, we decided to hold a mourning period: the #Helmerpact. I finished the book later than a lot of you guys, so I just completed the pact today. But I think I did it differently than the rest of you.
Helmer died honorably - fighting for the Mended Wood. And in a large way thanks to him, the Mending became a reality. Because of his sacrifice and the sacrifices of hundreds of others like him. He went down so that others may live, and live joyful lives, not overshadowed by fear and pain. And this is certainly a cause to celebrate.
You see, when I fulfilled the pact, I did wear black every day for a week, but each day, I also wore a little something with color in it. I meant no disrespect in any way to Helmer. Instead, I meant to honor him more fully, by celebrating the Mending that he worked so hard for. He gave his life for the cause, and he would want us to honor that. Helmer may be gone, but his legacy lives on, and he will forever be remembered with gratitude for his part in the fight for the mending.
My place beside you,
Eliza
I finished it yesterday, and I'm wearing at least some black every day
