Hi guys! Basically, I want to know everybody’s weird, wonderful, random and pointless headcanons about the Green Ember world. (Apologies if this has been done before, but I can’t find it so it needs redoing XD)
I’m going to dump some of my headcanons here, to get this started and because I need somewhere to put them because frankly nobody else cares.
A small selection of my GE headcanons:
#Nayna is real. In my world, they got together after the war ended and have sons called Victor and Bleston.
Kylen never gets over Heather. Unlike Garten Longtreader, though, he doesn’t start a war because of it. He just occasionally wishes things could have been different and never loves again.
Lund, Junder and Kent are with Wilfred when he arrives at First Warren in time for the last battle. Lund survives, just, but Kent dies protecting his best friend Nate. Junder lives too, having been set to work helping Moonlight feed everybody.
The remaining Bracers (Nate, Junder, Owen and Studge), after the war, buy a farm together and annoy each other as best friends are wont to do.
Cole and Jo, after the war, once try to trick Picket by howling like wolves behind his house. Possibly the worst idea they (by which I mean Jo) ever had. Picket was not impressed, and they all went away wiser.
Wilfred and Airen adopt little Helmer after Hewson’s death, and he is brought up on tales of his legendary namesake.
Heather gathers a history of Helmer’s life from those who knew him (Airen, Winslow, Wilfred, etc.) and writes the history of it and that of the other lord captains. She calls it The Last Lord Captain.
Winslow and Helmer were friends in Winslow’s youth, despite a ten year age gap. Winslow really respected him, until he had Daggler’s bitter words in his ear. They never got to have a reunion.
*pauses*
*looks at the ‘short’ list*
*grins sheepishly*
*shuts up*
As you can see, I could go on forever. I want to hear your thoughts, though. What random things are true in your Natalia that make it a better place for you? (Or worse, in the case of some of mine XD)
I'm assuming that the "Na-" in Nayna comes from Prince Naylen? That would be an interesting matchup, though since Heather and Emma talked about Heyna and also about "Naylen's wedding" I figure they would have mentioned if the two of them were an item. You did say "your world", though, so have at it. I know some fans would object to the suggestion based on the fact that, as Naylen is descended from Lander, he and Heyna would technically be (extremely distant) cousins. The idea of anyone naming a kid after Bleston seems just a tad awkward; it'd be like "hey son, let me tell you about your grandpa who wanted to murder everybody."
That Kylen idea makes me rather sad, I must say. There were definitely hints of him liking Heather, but never any sign that she reciprocated even remotely. I'd like to think that eventually (particularly given the whole "no one may ever die again" angle of Firstflower) he would have found another doe he could love and who would love him in return. I would hope Lund survives, since he had the unfortunate distinction of being Jo's friend before being ditched for the Bracers and, later, the Fowlers. I'm honestly kind of worried Studge may have been killed in the final fight.
The ex-Bracers all owning a farm together is an interesting concept; sounds like the basis for a sitcom. I'd imagine that any who survived would have eventually started families and maybe joined in expeditions like those led by the Pilgrim. The Helmer Hewson idea is a cute one, though I'd imagine he probably came into the care of one or more of his elder siblings. Even if the oldest ones didn't survive Harbone's fall or the final battle, we know Amber and two others were at Blackstone. As to the idea of there being an in-universe book about Helmer:
Winslow certainly knew Helmer at some point, but I don't get the impression they were all that close. He didn't immediately recognize Helmer when they first met and didn't seem particularly happy to recognize him later. Helmer, meanwhile, doesn't talk about Winslow as though they used to be pals.
Hope it doesn't feel like I tried to shoot down any of your ideas; I definitely like/support some of them. I'll probably contribute a few of my own at some point.
-Helmer is King Jupiter's third brother and once things got tense he left and joined the army.
-Whittle, Wilfred, and Garten were raised to be theives stealing off the streets but later got adopted by the Longtreader family.
-Lord Captain Perkin was arrested by Bleston trying to get a band of fugitives out of the city. Bleston kept Perkinson and raised him to believe his father was evil. Meanwhile Perkin was released and changed his name to Ramnor.
-Helmer once had a family but something happened and he lost them (hehe Bastille)
-Not all of the older Joveson siblings betrayed their father. Some changed their name and went into hiding, fighting in little ways.
-At one point, seven mounds was an outpost for scouts travelling across the country of Natalia, but after the war it became abandoned and dangerous.
-Morbin not only has wolves, rabbits, and raptors/birds under his command, he also has bats and rats (Nick hollow)
-Garten and the Commandant were once "besties", so Garten ranted about how he wanted to throw Heather and Picket in with the dragons, so when Heather was captured the Commandant told Whittle about those rants.
-the Joveson siblings used to have an extremely close bond, especially Whitbie and Winslow, and Whit wanted to stay with Winslow because his older brother was a really close friend.
-Captain Moonlight was actually a Lord Captain (still trying to remember who) that managed to escape by pulling a disguise trick.
-The pilgrim is Massie because Pilgrim had True Blue, which could have been brought from the Golden Coast and The Blue Moss Hills.
-Whitson looked all over Natalia for a suitable place to build a city and Cloud Mountain, Halfwind, and Harbone were three suitable locations that were already made, unfortunately the rabbits had a few superstitious captains back then and Whitson didn't want to anger anyone.
-Helmer was launched by the explosion into the air and captured by a raptor who later became his best friend.
-Similarly Garten survived the fall and swam to safety, hid in a cave with Pacer and Perkinson, and only many years later showed his face.
And the weirdest ones.....
-Elves built Cloud Mountain, Harbone, and Halfwind but later hated it, so they left and lived beynd the Akolan Mountains. (This is a theory my best friend and I came up with)
-If you take the secret citadels and take some of the letters out, rearrange the rest, and form words you get forbidden island, which was definitely a purposeful thing by the rabbits of Natalia.
Your headcanons are amazing!
Here are the ones I can remember from the top of my head:
--Whit has insomnia and when he was still on good terms with Winslow pre-series, they'd just sit in the library and talk. When he joined Cap's rebellion, he struggled a lot cuz the little tradition helped him sleep. After the war ended, Smalls and Emma joined in (they all deserve some sibling bonding yall)
--The Longtreaders will neither confirm nor deny that there is indeed an unmarked gravestone in the woods, a final respect to a certain lost family member. (whoops that got angsty--)
--Don't believe Kylen when he denies setting the Terrelain library on fire (by accident of course). He did it. There were multiple eyewitnesses.
--Bleston's wife singehandedly ran Terrelain with only a quarter of the army and no way of knowing if her family was alright (she and Lady Glen are now besties and have tea together)
--The Commandant used to be a pirate/sailor, and after war's end, he started up an old ship port.
And that's all I remember! I need to make fics about these
